Camera Raw 9.0 is now available as a final release through the update mechanism in Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC.
As mentioned here, updates to Camera Raw for Photoshop CS6 only include new camera support, lens profile support, and bug fixes. The new features listed in the release notes are only available in Photoshop CC.
New Features
Merge to HDR and Panorama
Combine your photos to produce panoramas and HDR images in ACR. The merged result is a DNG file and is saved to disk alongside the input images. If you are merging raw files, then the merge is performed using raw image data and the resulting DNG is just as much a raw file as the originals (and retains all the editing flexibility that comes with shooting raw). Because of this, you no longer need to edit your photos before merging. To see the new Merge feature in action, check out these videos: Merge to Pano | Merge to HDR
Usage Instructions:
- To merge files in ACR, select the photos that you want to merge then press the “Merge…” button at the top of the filmstrip. Select “Panorama” or “HDR” from the pop-up menu.
- After a preview of the merge is generated, select desired options in the merge preview dialog and click the “Merge” button to start a full-size merge.
- The full-size merge is performed in the background so you can continue to edit other photos or start other merges while you wait. To view status, or cancel a merge, press the link in the lower left area of the main ACR window (it will say “1 remaining” if you’ve started a merge).
- Once the full-size merge is complete, the resulting DNG file will be added to the bottom of the filmstrip and be available for further editing.
- HDR deghosting has three amounts: low, medium, and high. In order to make it easier to select the best option for a given image, a visualization option is also available
Known issues:
- Color artifacts in deep shadow areas of some HDR merges with deghosting and HDR panorama merges.
- If the merged pano result is larger than ACR’s largest supported image size then you will get an error. In future builds we plan on adding an option to scale the result so that it’s within ACR size limits.
Performance Improvements
Camera Raw can now use the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to speed up interactive image editing. The GPU is particularly helpful when using high-resolution screens, such as 4K and 5K displays.
Minimum system requirements:
- 64-bit only
- Mac OS 10.9 and higher or Windows 7 and higher
Usage Instructions:
- Ensure then GPU support is enabled by visiting the Camera Raw Preferences dialog and check the “Use Graphics Processor” box at the bottom.
- When this box is checked, Camera Raw will automatically determine whether the system’s GPU (if any) can be used to accelerate image drawing. If yes, Camera Raw will display the name of your graphics card below the checkbox. Otherwise, Camera Raw will display an error message.
- Note that the GPU options in Photoshop’s Preferences and Bridge’s Preferences have no effect on Camera Raw.
- Camera Raw’s GPU implementation is used only to accelerate the drawing of the main preview image within the Camera Raw dialog. It is not used for other tasks, such as saving images to disk, or opening images into Photoshop.
- Scrubby Zoom: Camera Raw offers a “Scrubby Zoom” option in GPU mode. With the Zoom tool selected, click on the Zoom menu (bottom-left of the image preview). Select “Scrubby Zoom” from the bottom of the menu to toggle scrubby zoom behavior on/off. When enabled, click-dragging on an image with the zoom tool will zoom smoothly in and out.

Is it just me, or is the .pkg file for Mac broken?
Answer is: just me. Weird issue with installer.app on my system. Fixed that and the new DNG converter is happy.
Please can you confirm when LR 5 will get updated to support the Nikon D7200.
I have updated LR CC to get D7200 support but it is unusable on a MacBook Air with an i7 processor and 8Gb RAM being to slow. I can well imagine there will be many people who will be extremely disappointed with LR6 unless something can be done to speed it up.
Lightroom 5 will not receive any future updates now that Lightroom CC/6.0 have been released.
To use the D7200, you need to:
1. Upgrade to LR6
or
2. Use the Free Adobe DNG Converter to convert your D7200 NEF files into DNG files that older versions of Adobe software can read.
I had to edit the EXIF data on every file to D5500 in order to import any file to PS or LS. I used a batch program which worked very nicely! Watch this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEuqFD-0KsM
Please can you confirm when LR5 will get updated to support the Nikon D7200.
I have updated LR CC to get the D7200 support but it is unusable being too slow.
We have many LR users in our Photographic Society and many will be disappointed with LR6 if nothing is done to speed it up. Right now I cannot recommend it to our members, which is very disappointing given how popular LR5 is with members.
Regards,
John Lord
Secretary – Bury St Edmunds Photographic Society
Lightroom 5 will not be updated with native support for the D7200. You can use the free DNG Converter (v9.0) to convert the files for compatibility in Lightroom 5. We should however, troubleshoot why things are slow for you in Lightroom CC. Post more details on your issue here: http://phtshp.us/report_a_problem
I’ll keep reporting this till I die…
A “fault” was introduced in ACR version 8.7 and is still present in this new version 9.0. Not a bug because there is no crash or bad results produced. The fault is that raw conversions are much slower than with version 8.6 or earlier, but only on systems with AVX/AVX2 support. Users with hardware made prior to 2012 will see no fault. Users with newer systems will suffer slow conversions (150%). This issue is documented and reported at the following:

Why did you remove the Synchronise button in Camera Raw 9.0 ? Now there is no option to bypass the Sync Menu ! Previously when once used, I was able to Synchronise files by clicking the button with OPT key pushed on Mac, and Synchronisation was made with last used settings without a need to open Synchronise menu every time ! Such a slow down in my workflow without this feature ! It was there for years – why remove it now ?
I’m with Lukas, the lost of the Sync All Alt option is driving me nuts. Why on Earth would you take that away?!!
I agree. My workflow is now much slower with the added clicking about. And now I have to learn a different keyboard shortcut. I do so enjoy having my work take even longer than before.
I as well, can’t believe they lost the sync button!
I’m missing that button already!
Yes, a ridiculous decision made by someone who does not use the software no doubt…
Adobe… first time in my 10 year history working with Photoshop and Camera Raw so many disappointments come at once. How is it that you fix one thing only to break other that was fine ? Thank you for making radial and linear gradient tool so smooth and darn fast – big wow! But why at the same time you made adjustment brush and spot removal so very slow, almost unusable ? Other things are preview’s generating – that one is now much slower than in previous version. Moving from file to file in Filmstrip caused me do make a miss judgment of unsharp image, as generating of previews is so slow – did add-on of circling arrows at top right corner was going to make people think that if you show that something is going on in the background, than people will not notice that same thing is slower than before !?
Many things are like that – my workflow on files slowdown at least twice ! And why did you hide Sync button ? Any practical reason for that ?
Odd feature – thank you for adding beautiful zoom animation between cropped view and un-cropped view… but that is also making a slow down, so why did you add it ?!
In general, you should not try to fix things, that were not broken, by making them worse !
Sorry for such a frustrated comment – but I am in a middle of a commercial job sorting out files, and can’t believe that everything is taking so much longer than it used to !
I totally agree. A everything I use seem slower now, it takes me twice the time to do the same thing 🙁
I totally agree with all of the above! It is MUCH slower now…
HUH??? In the ACR filmstrip, where’s “Select All?” Where’s “Synchronize?” How do I edit my preferences — to bring back those essential features??? What in the…The most essential file handling tools and buttons aren’t visible! Can I make them visible? I sure hope they’re in there somewhere, because I’ve been using them hundreds of times a week.
Can I go back to the previous version? This will kill my workflow! How can I revert to the previous edition?
Please…Help!
Tom B
I feel your pain ! It is disaster to me also, that they removed those buttons. Options are available under this small button next to filmstrip title, but that makes everything more clicks away than it was ! Also I discovered new shortcut on a Mac (not sure what it it on PC): Shift + Opt + S – this allows to synchronise files bypassing Sync menu. But I still would like the buttons back on top like they were there before – Adobe don’t fix something that was not broken !
It’s Shift, Alt S on the PC, great find, I couldn’t figure out the keyboard combo before. Should bring it back in the menu.
Ricky
Whoa, thank you!
I DL’d ACR9 for Mac from here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Macintosh
It installed fine but after restart when I open a raw file (Canon or Nikon) ACR 8.7 loads instead. Same result if I open from Finder or from Bridge. How do I force the update? I am a CC subscriber so it should be working.
That is the link to the DNG converter – not Adobe Camera Raw. Camera Raw for Photoshop must be installed via the CC App. You should be seeing updates in your CC App for Photoshop/Bridge. Have you applied those yet? If not, do so and you should have ACR 9 in your Photoshop.
Been waiting for this since I purchased my Nikon D7200. However I have downloaded Adobe DNG converter 9 onto to machines now, a Windows 7 laptop & Windows 8.1 laptop with both machines unable to convert my NEF files from my D7200. I just get the following message “The source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files”. Any ideas,
By chance, were the files you are trying to convert, previously opened in an older version of Capture NX (Nikon Software) Some older versions of the Nikon software caused Lightroom to not import the files. It is possible the DNG converter is experiencing the same issue.
They have been imported from camera using Nikon Transfer software but that a all. I have even sent a few of the files via dropbox to a friend to try and open with his copy of Lightroom, he is also unable to open them.
If you try a file that has not seen any Nikon software yet, does it work?
Spot on thanks, if any of the NEF files have come into contact with with ANY Nikon software they won’t open. Just converted a load of images straight from the SD card bypassing the Nikon Transfer programme and they all converted. Happy days, thanks for the help
Mark – I also have a D7200 but I cannot get LR6 to read the NEFs. Camera Raw9.0 installed, and no Nikon software installed. Any ideas? it’s driving me mad.
Applying a custom sharpening presets in ACR 9 reverts back to processing version 2003 instead of sticking with process version 2012. As a result, some of the settings get lost even when I switch back to the current processing version. Am I doing something wrong? Just yesterday, before the update to ACR 9, it worked as it should. I am working with CS6, BTW.
Dave,
I hope someone gets back to you on this. I am having the same problem. I have Photoshop CC 2014. I cannot use any of my presets in ACR 9.
Paul
I use photoshop cc2014 . All worked perfectly on my raw files from my canon power shot sx60hs till Photoshop asked me to update and installed 9. Now it puts up the raw image as a blue square with a white cross through it, help please
It sounds like you have a GPU conflict. In Adobe Camera Raw, go to Preferences. Uncheck the Use Graphics Processor box. Does the Blue Square disappear? If so, you likely need to obtain current graphics chip drivers from the manufacturer.
Ditto on the missing select all and sync buttons, absolutely crucial to workflow. Bring these back NOW! Whatever else you may have added is NOT worth adding at the expense of the Sync button!!
I use Bridge, so not sure if the same in Lightroom. The Synchronize button has been renamed “Filmstrip” – still in the same top, left position when you open multiple files in ACR. Click Filmstrip, then click “Select all, then click Filmstrip again and then click “Sync settings…
Sync button missing.. finally found all the parts hidden in various drop down menus. not as intuitive as the other versions. Adobe PLEASE Change the menus.. hide those parts that are rarely used and show the items that we all use like sync, select all.. etc…
I know adobe is trying to show, highlight the new features, but they have thius made my workflow more difficult and standard features hard to get to and use…
Ditto, Ditto, Ditto on the “sync” button and “select all” button. This is crucial to FAST workflow. You’ve just added time to our workflow, not made it faster…
Lightroom can not load DNG files generated by MagicLantern. Photoshop also can not open DNG Files since the update to CameraRAW 9
Can you post one of the DNG that you’re having issue with? (either to Creative Cloud or Dropbox and post a link)
Of course. Here is the Dropbox link:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/4cabtyvxb0b3htz/43840016%20-%2045834%20-%200025.DNG?dl=0
Anyone else here with this Problem?
I have a similar problem. Nikon D5500 raw files will not work correctly in Lightroom 5.7.1 with raw 9. It will not preview or import. Is there any work around?
5.7.1 does not support files from the Nikon D5500.
You have two options:
1. Upgrade to LR 6.x or CC2015.x
or
2. Use the free DNG converter from Adobe to convert your D5500 NEF files to DNG so that older versions of Lightroom can read them.
Just used Camera Raw 9 in anger for the first time. Anger being the appropriate word.
Sooo sloooow. Like others have mentioned, it takes an age to accurately render a preview which makes judging sharpness all but useless. Please advise how I might return to the last working version of 8.
There is a problem with the conversion of Canon EOS 70D raw files to DNG format: I get a more pronounced color noise and banding artifacts, compared to the original cr2 file. Camera RAW 8.7 has somehow reduced the effect, but the difference between the 2 formats remains, even in Camera Raw9 and Lightroom 6/CC.
How long has it been since your monitor was profiled? Lightroom is very sensitive to bad monitor profiles. It is possible that is the source for your artifacts.
What exactly does “new camera support for Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS50 (DMC-TZ70, DMC-TZ71)” mean? I use a TZ71 as an always-with-me camera and I thought if LR6 supports the camera that might be a reason to upgrade but I can’t see any difference when I activate “Profile corrections” in LR 6 Testversion. Am I missing something?
PS: LR6 is much slower in some functions.
New Camera support means that Lightroom will read and process files from that particular camera model. I am not sure what you mean by “Profile Corrections” can you elaborate?
Omg, I don’t really want to write this but…I mixed up the model numbers. I use a TZ61 not 71. I was hoping for a Lens correction function in LR for TZ61. Sorry about that! 😉
I’ve been trying to find out if the SIGMA dp1 Quattro can be used with Adobe camera raw yet? I see no reason to buy the Quattro without being able to use Adobe camera raw!
If it is on this list, it is supported: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
we have 2 computers. One is currently running with ACR 7 but one we recently updated to ACR 9 and editing on that computer went from a good speed down to a slooooooow speed since getting ACR 9. How do I revert back to ACR 7 on that computer? Thanks!
What OS/version are you on? What video card do you have?
I would suspect an old/bad video driver or an unsupported graphics card.
First, if you’re on windows, update your video drivers. Determine what video card you have and go *directly to the manufacturers website (nVidia or ATI/AMD)* and download the latest driver.
Just doing Windows Update won’t give you the latest and greatest drivers. You must go directly to your card manufacturers website to check for driver updates.
If that doesn’t solve it, go to the Preferences>Camera Raw in Photoshop and uncheck “Use Graphics Processor” under the Performance tab and restart Photoshop: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/acr-gpu-faq.html
The HDR Functionality is absolutely amazing. I’ve tried many other solution and this tops all and fits perfectly into my workflow.
The only issue is that there’s no batch mode. Adding batch HDR processing should be a top priority as I’m having to baby sit my computer (i7 3770MHZ / 12GB RAM) and merge for hours.
I did discover an undocumented shortcut — SHIFT + ALT + M = Merge to HDR w/o confirmation dialogue. This helps.
PLEASE, ADOBE, add batch HDR merge! PLEASE readers, leave a reply to request this!
You could also post a feature request at the official forum here: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/products/photoshop_family_photoshop_lightroom
Can you use Camera Raw 9 with Photoshop CS5? I have Lightroom 6.
thank you
No. Camera Raw 9 is compatible with CS6 and later. You can however get the latest camera support for older versions of our software through the free Adobe DNG Converter. Details here: http://adobe.ly/ACRandDNG
You need Lightroom 6.0 at least to read files from the D7200
Dear Adobe-
You made a huge mistake by not keeping the sync settings button quickly available to use. Some of us have a workflow we’ve used for year that is pretty darn fast. Using the keyboard shortcuts still enables an extra step that slows things down.
You guys need to add this back because it’s a crime and extremely frustrating to be honest. To be clear, the sync settings button needs to be available without clicking on the filmstrip. If this isn’t fixed I may have to look for other options… Absolutely ridiculous!!!
I have a Nikon D7200 using a tamron 15-300 I can’t import raw files. What’s a guy to do? I have LR5, what version of DNG 9.1 does not work!!
thanx
Elaxra,
If I am understanding you correctly, you are saying that you have downloaded the DNG Converter 9.1 and it doesn’t work. Does it fail to convert your NEF to DNG or does Lightroom fail to read the resulting DNG File? Or is it doing something else?
I use Elements 12 and find that two recently purchased cameras (Nikon D7200, and Canon SX60 HS) are not covered by Camera Raw 8.5, which is the only, and most recent update for my PSE12. I see that an ACR 9.1 is now shown as having been released. Is this going to be included in a forthcoming new update for Elements 12 please??
Do I not get a reply to my concerns??
I just received confirmation, Doug. Photoshop Elements 12 can only update to ACR version 8.5. An upgrade of Elements will be required to use the 9.1 update.
https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
I am sorry it took so long to get back to you.
When will LR6 support Sony RX 100 IV? Unable to convert RAW, not supported in RAW9.
It should be coming in the next update, Dean. A release date isn’t available yet.
Any response to my question re Elements 12, and my new Nikon D7200 and Canon SX60 HS, please??
Whether the new zoom will be available in Lightroom?
I just purchased a Nikon D7200 and when put the SD card in my PC the lightroom software opens but it can not import the raw files. I got this message: the files are not recognized by the raw format support in lightroom.
What is the solution? please let me know.
You must be using at least Lightroom 6.0 or CC 2015.0 in order to import the raw files from the Nikon D7200. What is the version of your Lightroom?
Please bring back the synchronize button. There is no reason to even see the word filmstrip. It doesn’t serve a purpose remotely as important as synchronize.
Adobe people are you nutz with the sync setting. Some of us do not use\like Lightroom. We would love your attention on this one. Have a nice day !
Hola, he actualizado mi lightroom5 al 6, pero no puedo abrir mis archivos RAW de mi nueva NIKON D7200. Mi pregunta es como puedo solucionar este problema. Gracias.
