Lightroom CC 2015.2 now available

Update #2: Lightroom 6.3/CC 2015.3 is now available which includes the previous import functionality, bug fixes and added camera/lens profile support.

Update: We plan to restore the old import experience in our next update. In the meantime, if you need to restore previous import functionality, or are experiencing other issues with Lightroom 2015.2.x/6.2.x, we recommend you roll back to the Lightroom 2015.1.1/6.1.1 update until things are reverted and corrected. See instructions here: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/roll-back-to-prior-update.html

We’re happy to announce the immediate availability of major updates across the Lightroom ecosystem today!

Release Notes

New Features – Lightroom desktop

Dehaze as a Local Adjustment*

We added Dehaze as a global adjustment in the Lightroom CC 2015.1 release and are excited to see the widespread interest in the feature.  We wanted to extend the functionality, and I’m happy to announce that you can now apply Dehaze as a Local Adjustment.  This means that you can use Dehaze with the Radial Filter, Graduated Filter and Local Adjustment Brush.

* Please note that this feature is not available in the standalone version of Lightroom 6

Revamped Import

We redesigned the Import experience to make finding and importing your photos easier and more visual.  The redesign was driven by our desire to make the import workflow more explicit and clear.  The workflow is 1. Select a source, 2. Select images 3.  Choose any import settings (optional) and 4. Import.

The revamped Import experience is based on customer feedback and we’re excited to hear what you think.

  1.  Select a Source:  There is a new “Add Photos” screen which scans to identify the potential locations for photos on your hard drive.  You can also easily select from a folder, a connected camera (via USB cable), a memory card, external hard drive, or Photoshop Elements catalog.
  2. Select images:  The Import Dialog has been redesigned.  Your source will already be selected (you choose it in step 1) so you can specify which images to import.  We recommend importing all.
  3. Choose any import settings (optional):  While there isn’t a need to change the default settings, you can open the gear icon (on the top right) to adjust and change import settings.
  4. Hit the import button.

Improvements to “Import from Photoshop Elements” feature

In addition to Import, we’ve revamped the Import from Photoshop Elements experience.  Now you can migrate the images from your Photoshop Elements catalog into Lightroom easily.  To do so, click on the Photoshop Elements icon in the “Add Photos” screen (step 1 from above).  Select the Elements catalog and click the Import button.  Lightroom will handle the rest for you automatically.

Camera Raw 9.2 is now available

Camera Raw 9.2 is now available through the update mechanism in Photoshop CC and the Creative Cloud application.

As mentioned in an update to our camera support policy here, Camera Raw 9.2 is only available in Photoshop CC or later.  Customers using older versions of Photoshop can utilize the DNG Converter for continued camera support.

New Features in Camera Raw 9.2

Dehaze as a Local Adjustment

We added Dehaze as a global adjustment in the Camera Raw 9.1 release and are excited to see the widespread interest in the feature.  We wanted to extend the functionality, and I’m happy to announce that you can now apply Dehaze as a Local Adjustment.  This means that you can use Dehaze with the Radial Filter, Graduated Filter and Local Adjustment Brush.

Birds Eye View

This is a fast way to navigate across the image, especially when zoomed in. It is similar to the existing feature in the Photoshop app itself. Here’s how to use it:

  • Press and hold H.
  • Click and drag to set the position of the zoom rectangle as desired.  The zoom rectangle is shown as an outline around the cursor.
  • Release the mouse. The image zooms to the area chosen in the previous step. The selected tool remains unchanged.
  • If you start in Fit View mode or smaller, the zoom rectangle will represent 100% pixel view (1:1). This is a quick way to zoom to 1:1 at a specific part of the image (such as a person’s face, or other area of interest).
  • If you start zoomed in, then after you release the mouse you’ll return to the same zoom level. For example, if you start at 200%, then after releasing the mouse you’ll be back at 200%.
  • Birds Eye View is only available when GPU is enabled.

Usability improvements to modal tools

Modal tools include Spot removal, red eye correction, local adjustment brush, graduated filter and radial filter.

We’ve changed the behavior of the return and escape buttons when using a modal tool.  In the past, they would dismiss the modal tool.  The new behavior is:

  • If there is an active correction typing return or escape will deselect that correction.
    • In the case of the three local correction tools (brush, graduated filter, radial filter), the radio button at the top of the panel will get set to “New” so that the next click will create a new correction. This saves a bit of cursor movement; you no longer need to move over to the panel in order to start work on a new correction.
  • If there is no active correction, the Zoom tool becomes selected. This matches the behavior of the Crop tool.

  • Fixed missing Camera Matching Profiles for Olympus Stylus 1 and 1s
  • Improve quality of display color management in GPU mode. Color and tone gradations are now smoother.
  • Improve quality of image while using Scrubby Zoom.
  • Fixed intermittent crash when using Red Eye tool.

Camera Raw 9.1 is now available

Camera Raw 9.1 is now available through the update mechanism in Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC.

As mentioned here, updates to Camera Raw for Photoshop CS6 only include new camera support, lens profile support, and bug fixes.  The new features listed in the release notes are only available in Photoshop CC.

New Features

  • Dehaze
    • Many outdoor scenes have some amount of haze due to atmospheric conditions. Dehaze is a new feature for removing/adding haze and fog from pictures.
    • The user can control how much haze to remove by adjusting a new slider in the Effects panel in the Dehaze section. This feature can also be used in the other direction to increase the amount of haze.
    • Recommended Workflow – Adjust the white balance of the image before applying the Dehaze control.
  • Local White and Black Adjustment Sliders
    • Available with all 3 local adjustment tools:  Gradient Filter, Radial Filter and Local adjustment brush
    • Useful for fine-tuning tonality near the brightest and darkest parts of the picture. For instance, they can be used to increase the contrast of highlights.
    • Recommended Workflow – Make your global adjustments first and then use the local adjustments to fine tune.  Use the clip warning indicator to help avoid clipping highlights and shadows.

  • Fujifilm X-T10
  • Nikon 1 J5
  • Nikon D810A
  • Panasonic DMC-G7
  • Pentax K-S2

  • Reduced “color blur” artifacts when processing Fujifilm X-Trans raw images. In collaboration with Fujifilm, we are still investigating methods to improve fine detail rendering and overall edge definition.
  • The “Remove Chromatic Aberration” checkbox is now enabled by default for all Fujifilm cameras.
  • Fixed crash when reading some JPEG images.
  • Fixed bug where Camera Raw Filter would incorrectly show a soft-proofed image.
  • Improved quality of display color management on some wide-gamut displays when GPU acceleration is enabled.
  • HDR and Pano Merge: Cleared in-camera crop before merging rather than destructively applying it prior to merging.
  • Pano Merge: Fixed a Pano blending issue specific to Leica M9.
  • Fixed a bug with Panasonic LX100 – extended ISO 100 was too bright and Magenta Highlights have been fixed.
  • Fixed a bug with Nikon Coolpix P7800 NRW raw files that showed only Matrix as camera profile.

June updates to CC Photography

Lightroom CC 2015.1 and Lightroom 6.1 are now available on Adobe.com.  The goal of this release is to provide additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom.  Lightroom on iOS v1.5 is also now available.

Bug fixes, Tethered capture, new camera and lens support updates are available in both Lightroom 6 and Lightroom CC.

Lightroom CC on the desktop

  • Dehaze*
    • Many outdoor scenes have some amount of haze due to atmospheric conditions. Dehaze is a new feature for removing/adding haze and fog from pictures.
    • The user can control how much haze to remove by adjusting a new slider in the Effects panel in the Dehaze section. This feature can also be used in the other direction to increase the amount of haze.
    • Recommended Workflow – Adjust the white balance of the image before applying the Dehaze control.
  • Local White and Black Adjustment Sliders*
    • Available with all 3 local adjustment tools:  Gradient Filter, Radial Filter and Local adjustment brush
    • Useful for fine-tuning tonality near the brightest and darkest parts of the picture. For instance, they can be used to increase the contrast of highlights.
    • Recommended Workflow – Make your global adjustments first and then use the local adjustments to fine tune.  Use the clip warning indicator to help avoid clipping highlights and shadows.

* Please note that these features are not available in the standalone version of Lightroom 6.1.

Lightroom on iOS:

  • Video support:  You can now import, and sync your iPhone and iPad created videos from Lightroom on iOS to the web and desktop.

Spring updates to CC Photography

The Photography team is proud to share the latest updates available to you in the Creative Cloud Photography. Starting with last year’s Lightroom mobile launch on iPad, we outlined a vision for a connected photographic workflow that allows you to create, access, organize, edit and share your photos from all of your devices. You provided lots of feedback on both the vision and our strategy and I’m happy to announce that we’ve made substantial improvements to Lightroom across all your devices that help you organize, edit, and share your photos in a fast, easy way with the highest quality.

Today we’re happy to announce a major update to Creative Cloud Photography, with a brand new version of Lightroom on the desktop and updates across all pieces of the Lightroom ecosystem.

Lightroom CC on the desktop

  • HDR Merge: Create natural-looking or surreal images from extremely high-contrast scenes. Using HDR merge, you can easily combine multiple shots taken with different exposure settings into a single high dynamic range image. Click here to learn more.
  • Panorama Merge: Stitch together multiple images, including raw files, to create stunning panorama shots. Click here to learn more.
  • Performance Improvements: Get more done, faster. Lightroom takes advantage of compatible graphics processors to boost its overall speed, especially in the Develop module.
  • Facial Recognition: Easily find and organize photos of family and friends with new Facial Recognition features in Lightroom CC. Click here to learn more.
  • Advanced video slideshows: Combine still images, video and music with professional effects like pan and zoom. Click here to learn more.
  • Filter Brush: Precisely control which parts of your image are affected by the Graduated or Radial filters. Now you can use a brush to edit the filter’s mask, adding or subtracting filter effects wherever you want.

Lightroom on mobile

  • Android Tablet Support: Previously only available on Android phones, now you can sync, edit, organize and share on Android tablets as well.
  • Native DNG support on Android: Android 5.0 (aka “Lollipop”) now allows you to shoot photos in raw, and saves them as DNG files. You can now import those DNG files directly from your Android device.
  • Android SD card support: You can now specify local storage to an SD card rather than internal device storage.
  • TIFF support on iOS: If you’re creating TIFF files on your iOS device, you can now import and edit them using Lightroom.
  • Improved crop experience on iOS: We simplified the number of tiles in our crop UI so you can now easily find aspect ratios, and we added an auto-straighten function, directly leveraging the Upright technology.

Sharing and storytelling options

  • Support for more apps and devices: Lightroom is now more easily integrated with other Adobe apps like Adobe Voice and Slate on your iPad. You can also now use Lightroom on more devices, including Android tablets in addition to iOS phones, tablets and Android phones.

FAQ:

Complete Lightroom CC/Camera Raw FAQ

Q:  Is Lightroom still available as boxed software?

Yes, it is. However, the perpetual license doesn’t provide access to Lightroom mobile or Lightroom web.

Q: What are the minimum requirements for GPU support?

Minimum requirements are a graphics card that runs on OpenGL 3.3 and later. Please also ensure that your card is running the latest drivers. On Mac, you can do this by updating to the latest operating system updates. On Windows, please update by downloading and installing the latest drivers from your manufacturer’s website:

  • Nvidia: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

Camera Raw 9 now available

Camera Raw 9.0 is now available as a final release through the update mechanism in Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC.

As mentioned here, updates to Camera Raw for Photoshop CS6 only include new camera support, lens profile support, and bug fixes.  The new features listed in the release notes are only available in Photoshop CC.

New Features

Merge to HDR and Panorama

Combine your photos to produce panoramas and HDR images in ACR. The merged result is a DNG file and is saved to disk alongside the input images. If you are merging raw files, then the merge is performed using raw image data and the resulting DNG is just as much a raw file as the originals (and retains all the editing flexibility that comes with shooting raw). Because of this, you no longer need to edit your photos before merging.  To see the new Merge feature in action, check out these videos:  Merge to Pano | Merge to HDR

Usage Instructions:

  • To merge files in ACR, select the photos that you want to merge then press the “Merge…” button at the top of the filmstrip. Select “Panorama” or “HDR” from the pop-up menu.
  • After a preview of the merge is generated, select desired options in the merge preview dialog and click the “Merge” button to start a full-size merge.
  • The full-size merge is performed in the background so you can continue to edit other photos or start other merges while you wait. To view status, or cancel a merge, press the link in the lower left area of the main ACR window (it will say “1 remaining” if you’ve started a merge).
  • Once the full-size merge is complete, the resulting DNG file will be added to the bottom of the filmstrip and be available for further editing.
  • HDR deghosting has three amounts: low, medium, and high. In order to make it easier to select the best option for a given image, a visualization option is also available

Known issues:

  • Color artifacts in deep shadow areas of some HDR merges with deghosting and HDR panorama merges.
  • If the merged pano result is larger than ACR’s largest supported image size then you will get an error. In future builds we plan on adding an option to scale the result so that it’s within ACR size limits.

Performance Improvements

Camera Raw can now use the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to speed up interactive image editing. The GPU is particularly helpful when using high-resolution screens, such as 4K and 5K displays.

Minimum system requirements:

  • 64-bit only
  • Mac OS 10.9 and higher or Windows 7 and higher

Usage Instructions:

  • Ensure then GPU support is enabled by visiting the Camera Raw Preferences dialog and check the “Use Graphics Processor” box at the bottom.
  • When this box is checked, Camera Raw will automatically determine whether the system’s GPU (if any) can be used to accelerate image drawing. If yes, Camera Raw will display the name of your graphics card below the checkbox. Otherwise, Camera Raw will display an error message.
  • Note that the GPU options in Photoshop’s Preferences and Bridge’s Preferences have no effect on Camera Raw.
  • Camera Raw’s GPU implementation is used only to accelerate the drawing of the main preview image within the Camera Raw dialog. It is not used for other tasks, such as saving images to disk, or opening images into Photoshop.
  • Scrubby Zoom: Camera Raw offers a “Scrubby Zoom” option in GPU mode. With the Zoom tool selected, click on the Zoom menu (bottom-left of the image preview). Select “Scrubby Zoom” from the bottom of the menu to toggle scrubby zoom behavior on/off. When enabled, click-dragging on an image with the zoom tool will zoom smoothly in and out.
