Answering Your Questions on Lightroom CC, Lightroom Classic CC and More

How does this update affect my old Photography/Creative Cloud Plan?
TH: Within the Creative Cloud Photography plan we’ve updated the Lightroom you know and love to include performance and editing enhancements in a new version called Lightroom Classic. We added new Lightroom CC and a small amount of storage for you to experiment and try out the new cloud-based Lightroom offering.  The Creative Cloud Photography plan – Lightroom Classic, Photoshop CC, and now the new Lightroom CC plus Adobe Spark – is still $9.99 per month. There is also a new Lightroom CC plan that is $9.99 per month that does not include Lightroom Classic or Photoshop CC but does include 1TB of cloud storage for your photography library.

Lightroom Classic

Is Lightroom Classic being phased out? How long will it be until Adobe kills Lightroom Classic?
TH: No, we’re not phasing out Lightroom Classic and remain committed to investing in Lightroom Classic in the future. We know that for many of you, Lightroom Classic, is a tool you know and love and so it has an exciting roadmap of improvements well into the future. But please hold us accountable as we make updates in the following months and years to let us know if we’re meeting your expectations.

Lightroom CC

Does everything have to be synced to Lightroom CC or can users pick and choose what content syncs with the cloud?
TH: For this 1.0 release, everything imported is intended to upload to Creative Cloud. We clearly understand that there are situations where a customer would not want all of their images uploaded to Creative Cloud so let’s talk about those situations and how we can address them. In the case where a customer doesn’t want any images in the Creative Cloud, Lightroom Classic is and will continue to be an excellent workflow choice.

Lightroom Tech Questions

Some users have about 8TB worth of photos. How do they fit that into 1TB of space?
TH: We have plans available for 1TB, 2TB, 5TB and 10TB right now at $9.99 per TB per month.  Let us know if you want more.

What if you don’t have superfast, unlimited Internet to sync everything? Won’t it likely take days to upload a full shoot of raw files to a cloud server?
TH: Upload times depend on your bandwidth but you can still start working on your images immediately. If your bandwidth is not going to support your current volume of photography, Lightroom Classic is and will continue to be an excellent workflow choice.

Lightroom 6

Why did you abandon the Lightroom standalone version?
TH: Customers are overwhelmingly choosing the Creative Cloud Photography plan as the preferred way to get access to Lightroom. We’re aligning our investment with the direction our customers have signaled over the last several years.

On Lightroom Performance

I would like to address concerns recently voiced by our community of customers around Lightroom performance, as improving performance is our current top priority. We have a history, starting with our first public beta, of working with our customers to address workflow and feature needs, and we’d like to take that same approach regarding your performance concerns. We already understand many of the current pain points around GPU, import performance, certain editing tasks and review workflows and are investing heavily in improving those areas.  Over the past year we’ve added numerous enhancements to address your performance concerns but we understand we will have a lot of work to do to meet your expectations.   If you have feedback or would like to work with the Lightroom team on your most pressing issues, please fill out this survey.

Camera Raw 9.4 Now Available

Camera Raw 9.4 is now available through the update mechanism in Photoshop CC and the Creative Cloud application.

As mentioned in an update to our camera support policy here, Camera Raw 9.4 is only available in Photoshop CC or later.  Customers using older versions of Photoshop can utilize the DNG Converter for continued camera support.

Introducing Boundary Warp

Stitched panoramas often have non-rectangular boundaries. There are several ways to handle irregular boundaries. The most common approach is to apply a rectangular crop. This is straightforward, but important image details near the boundary may be lost due to cropping. Another approach is to use Content Aware Fill (in Photoshop) to fill in the transparent areas outside the boundary. This can be effective, but may require multiple attempts to obtain a satisfying (smooth, artifact-free) result. It can also be expensive and requires rendering out the panorama to an output-referred format. Boundary Warp is a feature that provides another approach to handling the irregular boundary of panoramas. The feature analyzes the boundary and warps the image so that its edges fit a rectangular frame.  Here’s a visual example of the feature:

Fixed Bugs and Other Changes:

  • Fixed issue where vertical panoramas created using Merge could appear with the wrong orientation.
  • Addressed a bug that would ignore model-specific custom default settings for some cameras, including some Leica and Sony models.
  • Corrected occasional crash using Crop tool after a Merge operation completed.
  • Fixed an issue where state of HSL controls would be rendered incorrectly in GPU mode when applying Contrast or Saturation local control adjustments.
  • Addressed the issue of the SIGMA 50mm f1.4 ART lens incorrectly identified as Zeiss Milvus 50mm f1.4.

Lightroom CC 2015.4 / 6.4 now available

Lightroom CC 2015.4 and Lightroom 6.4 are now available on Adobe.com.  The goal of this release is to provide additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom.  This release also includes a new Boundary Warp feature for Creative Cloud members.

Lightroom 6.2 Import Update

Update: Lightroom 6.3/CC 2015.3 is now available which includes the previous import functionality, bug fixes and added camera/lens profile support.

I’d like to thank our customers for their patience while the team reviewed several options for restoring import workflows and addressing quality in Lightroom. We can now confirm that, in our next dot release, we will restore the previous import experience. We are still working on details and timing. In the meantime, if you need to restore previous import functionality prior to the next update, please refer to this document on how to roll back to Lightroom 6.1.1 (https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/roll-back-to-prior-update.html).

We will continue to investigate ways to improve the ease of use of our photography products and will do so via an open dialog, with both existing and new customers.

Lightroom 6.2 Release Update and Apology

Update #2: Lightroom 6.3/CC 2015.3 is now available which includes the previous import functionality, bug fixes and added camera/lens profile support.

In the meantime, if you need to restore previous import functionality, or are experiencing other issues with Lightroom 2015.2.x/6.2.x, we recommend you roll back to the Lightroom 2015.1.1/6.1.1 update until things are reverted and corrected. I’d like to personally apologize for the quality of the Lightroom 6.2 release we shipped on Monday.  The team cares passionately about our product and our customers and we failed on multiple fronts with this release.  In our efforts to simplify the import experience we introduced instability that resulted in a significant crashing bug.  The scope of that bug was unclear and we made the incorrect decision to ship with the bug while we continued to search for a reproducible case(Reproducible cases are essential for allowing an engineer to solve a problem).   The bug has been fixed and today’s update addresses the stability of Lightroom 6.

The simplification of the import experience was also handled poorly.  Our customers, educators and research team have been clear on this topic: The import experience in Lightroom is daunting.  It’s a step that every customer must successfully take in order to use the product and overwhelming customers with every option in a single screen was not a tenable path forward.  We made decisions on sensible defaults and placed many of the controls behind a settings panel.  At the same time we removed some of our very low usage features to further reduce complexity and improve quality.  These changes were not communicated properly or openly before launch.  Lightroom was created in 2006 via a 14 month public beta in a dialog with the photography community.  In making these changes without a broader dialog I’ve failed the original core values of the product and the team.

The team will continue to work hard to earn your trust back in subsequent releases and I look forward to reigniting the type of dialog we started in 2006.

Update October 12, 2015:  With 432 comments and counting I just wanted to let folks know that I’m reading all of the feedback and the team will provide an update this week.

What happens to Lightroom after my membership ends?

[note]: We recently updated to Lightroom 6.0.  When you’re subscription ends in Lr CC / Lr6, you will continue to have access to the Library, Slideshow, Web, Book and Print Modules as described below.

Since the launch of the Creative Cloud, Adobe has engaged in an ongoing dialog with the photographic community. We’ve tackled mobile workflows, provided ongoing enhancements and lastly, provided a membership plan tailor made for all levels of photographers. With the latest update to Lightroom 5.5 I believe we’ve also addressed a lingering concern in the community: What happens to my photographs after my membership ends?  With Lightroom 5.5, at the end of a membership, the desktop application will continue to launch and provide access to the photographs managed within Lightroom as well as the Slideshow, Web, Book or Print creations that we know many photographers painstakingly create. The Develop and Map modules have been disabled in order to signal the end of the membership and the need to renew in order to receive Adobe’s continuous innovation in those areas. Access to Lightroom mobile workflows will also cease to function. We hope this meets the expectations of our customers and we look forward to an ongoing dialog.

I’m keenly aware that photographers would like to leave their laptops behind and head out on the road with just their DSLR, Camera Connection Kit and an iPad.  It’s not just pros on a shoot in the middle of a remote location, it extends all the way to every photography enthusiast who has debated with their spouse on the necessity of bringing a bulky laptop on the family vacation. This is something the Lightroom team wants to tackle with Lightroom mobile and customers can realize the beginning of this in a JPEG-only workflow.  But there are a few hurdles we need to address before we can have a robust experience that’s able to include raw files:

  • We know our customers often like to shoot in a raw format.  That’s a lot of data and the ingest experience on current iPads via a Camera Connection Kit is quite slow.
  • The way the Camera Roll works on iOS, an application like Lightroom mobile would need to duplicate the storage required by a photographer’s images then leave customers with an awkward deletion experience on the camera roll to save space.
  • The bandwidth required to pass the originals from the iPad through to our servers and back to your desktop would be substantial and slow.

We’ve utilized a Smart Preview solution on the desktop to expedite access to original files on mobile devices but that becomes more difficult going in the other direction due to processing requirements and the fact that customers would expect the original to eventually arrive on their desktop.(And that transfer to the desktop should occur without a kludgey, manual copy and link-to-original workflow from the CF or SD card)  We’ll need to address all three of these areas before we can have a suitable field triage workflow.  We can tackle the bandwidth requirement with intelligent, downstream use of P2P connections but the first two issues will still remain a challenge.

Adobe Camera Raw support for Photoshop CC and Photoshop CS6

Today’s Photoshop CC announcement requires a modest change in our camera raw support policy.  Because Adobe is still selling Photoshop CS6, those customers will continue to receive updated camera raw file format compatibility via Adobe Camera Raw.  When we update ACR with new camera support, Photoshop CS6 customers can work with the new version of the Camera Raw plug-in.  No new features or functionality will be available in ACR to Photoshop CS6 customers as part of those updates. (No Upright, advanced healing brush or radial filter, etc.)  I don’t have a timeline for how long this camera raw support will continue for Photoshop CS6 but I want to be consistent with our past policy of providing raw support for currently shipping products.

Lightroom and the Creative Cloud

Adobe’s recent announcement around our Creative Cloud update has generated quite a few questions around how it will impact Lightroom 5.  I’ve answered a few of the questions below and please feel free to ask additional questions in the comments.

 

Q. How much will Lightroom 5 cost?

A. Lightroom 5 is available for an estimated $149 US.  Customers of previous versions of Lightroom can upgrade to Lightroom 5 for an estimated $79 US.

 

Q. Will Lightroom 5 be included as part of Adobe Creative Cloud?

A. Yes.  Lightroom 5 will be delivered to Creative Cloud members at no extra charge when it’s available.

 

Q. Will I still be able to purchase Lightroom 5 outside of the Creative Cloud

A. Yes. Lightroom 5 will continue to be available as a standalone product, available for purchase as an Electronic Software Download(ESD) or as a boxed product with a traditional perpetual license.

 

Q. Will there be a different version of Lightroom called Lightroom CC?

A. No.

 

Q. Will there be features of Lightroom 5 that are exclusive to Creative Cloud members?

A. No.

 

Q. Will Lightroom become a subscription only offering after Lightroom 5?

A. Future versions of Lightroom will be made available via traditional perpetual licenses indefinitely.

 

Q. Is Lightroom included with a Photoshop CC single-app subscription?

A. Lightroom is available as stand-alone purchase, and through the full Creative Cloud package. Lightroom is not included with a Photoshop CC single-app membership.
