Lightroom 4 and Windows XP

As many have noticed, the Lightroom 4 public beta we released last week does not support Windows XP.  This decision did not come lightly and was based on a number of factors.  With each version of Lightroom, our goal is always to provide a consistently excellent customer experience.  Developing and testing across Operating System versions and platforms to ensure that we’re achieving this goal is a significant effort that takes time and resources.  XP is substantially different from Windows Vista and Windows 7, and requires a independent testing matrix, which increases the complexity of our development efforts.   Every cycle we need to make difficult resource tradeoff decisions and operating system support competes heavily with new features and performance enhancements planned for each version.  The decision this cycle was to end XP support for Lightroom going forward.

NOTE: On the Mac platform we needed to make a similar decision to end support for systems that are not 64-bit capable.

Lightroom 4 beta resources

This is a list of various resources dedicated to educating photographers about Lightroom 4 public beta.  Please submit additional content through the comment field and I’ll add them to the list.  Adobe maintains an official YouTube channel that provides information about Lightroom 4 public beta but it’s often helpful to review other resources for a different perspective.

 

Lightroom 4 beta now available

The Lightroom team is proud to introduce the fourth major version of the product designed for and by photographers. It was 6 years ago today when we introduced the very first public beta of Lightroom at MacWorld on January 9, 2006. (Yes, it was Mac only, smaller in footprint than most raw files and didn’t have a crop tool!) Since 2006 we’ve been hard at work improving an application that’s intended to be as easy to use as it is powerful. This release builds on the fundamental performance architecture and image quality improvements in Lightroom 3 to provide a truly complete workflow solution. I kept hearing from customers that they love Lightroom but needed to leave the Lightroom to complete X, Y or Z. Lightroom 4 tackles those issues with improvements to image organization, adjustment tools and comprehensive publishing options.

Primary Known Issues

  • Lightroom 4 beta is not complete but please provide feedback on the available enhancements.
  • Lightroom 4 beta will not upgrade Lightroom 1.x, Lightroom 2.x or Lightroom 3.x catalogs. The beta is intended to be used for testing and feedback purposes. Lightroom 1.x, 2.x, 3.x and 4 beta libraries will be able to be migrated to the finished version of Lightroom 4.
  • While data loss is not expected, this is an early ‘beta’ quality build and you should always work on duplicates of files that are securely backed up.
  • Lightroom 4 beta will not overwrite or interfere with a machine that currently has Lightroom 1, Lightroom 2 or Lightroom 3 installed.
  • Develop settings applied in Lightroom 4 beta are not guaranteed to transfer correctly to the final version of Lightroom 4
  • The Lightroom 4 beta will expire after Lightroom 4.0 is available
  • Additional known issues are listed below.

1. Download Lightroom 4 beta from labs.adobe.com
2. Unzip the download then open the disk image and double-click the Lightroom Beta 4 package in the resulting window then follow the on-screen instructions

Windows Vista, Windows 7
1. If you are running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or Windows Vista, we recommend downloading the 64-bit version of Lightroom.
2. To find out if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, do the following:
a. Open System by clicking the Start button, right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.
b. Under System, you can view the system type.
c. If your version of Windows is not 64-bit, or if you are not sure, download the 32-bit version.
3. Unzip the download then double-click the Lightroom 4 beta installer then follow the on-screen instructions

Anyone can download and work with the Lightroom 4 beta for the duration of the beta program. There is no serial number requirement.

Lightroom 4 beta Enhancements

Video Support
Lightroom 3 added the ability to import, manage and tag video files but as the popularity of video capture increases it’s important to provide a single, robust workflow solution that can support all of your imaging needs regardless if they’re still images or video captures. Lightroom 4 adds native playback for a wide variety of formats from mobile phones to high end DSLRs. Photographers can also apply common image adjustments to their video clips in real time. Additional video details:

  • Video playback directly within Lightroom
  • Video trimming (In and Out points)
  • Set Video poster frame. (This is the thumbnail that appears in the grid view)
  • Extract a single frame from a video as a JPEG file
  • Most popular DSLR, compact camera and smart phone video formats supported including AVCHD (AVCHD is the native format for Sony DSLRs and many new Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens, MIL, cameras)

Map Module

It’s great that digital cameras automatically record a date/time stamp so that when it comes time find that image from New Years 2003, it’s easy to filter your image collection based on the information recorded by the camera. However, the “when” of an image is only half of the equation. What about the “where?” As an increasing number of cameras, smart phones leading the pack with compact cameras following closely behind, the “where” is also being recorded at the time of capture. Even Sony’s high-end a77 and a65 DSLR cameras have an option to automatically record the GPS coordinates of where you captured an image. But for those of us who don’t speak fluid latitude and longitude coordinates, we need a visual map interface to find the images by location. Lightroom 4 adds a dedicated map module that loads Google Maps to present your images in a clear and concise view. If your camera doesn’t automatically record the coordinates of your images you can easily drag and drop images to a location, use GPX tracklog files to link images based on date/time stamps or define saved locations that can be quickly associated with a set of images. (Not surprisingly, this link to Google Maps will only work when you are connected to the World Wide Web.) Additional Map details:

  • Tag images with a location using drag and drop or saved location assignment
  • Search for locations
  • Create Saved Locations
  • Managed privacy settings for saved locations
  • Load GPX tracklogs and auto tag images based on date/time stamps

Develop Module (Updated 2012 Process Version)

Ever wonder why there was both an Exposure control and a Brightness control in Lightroom’s Develop module? Why the Black setting defaulted to 5 and Brightness/Contrast to 50 and 25 respectively? When the Camera Raw plug-in was introduced in 2003 these concepts weren’t overwhelming for those intrepid photographers willing to switch their camera’s capture format to “RAW.” (It’s not an acronym so I have no idea why folks continue to capitalize that word…) When Lightroom and the Camera Raw plug-in started supporting JPEG and TIFF files, the visual appearance of the settings and preset behavior was never truly optimized for the additional formats. Lightroom 4 rationalizes the controls and addresses a fundamental photographic problem of balancing highlight and shadow detail. Please give the new tone controls a try on your most challenging images as well as the additional controls listed below:

  • Simplified controls in the Basic panel
    • Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks
  • Powerful, content aware, shadow and highlight controls to extract all of the dynamic range in a single capture

Direct Email from within Lightroom

I realize that this feature has 1998 written all over it but it’s still a very common request to be able to email from directly within Lightroom.

These enhancements will be represented in the next DNG Specification update.(Version 1.4)

  • Embed Fast Load Data options dramatically improves image loading performance in the Develop module
  • Lossy compression option provides significant file savings with minimal quality impact. (Ideal for archiving outtakes or reducing the size of time lapse projects without losing the flexibility of raw)
  • Resolution reduction via export provides the ability to share lower resolution versions of the original raw file without losing the capabilities offered by raw.
  • Metadata and filter options available for DNG file types

Lightroom 4 Additional Features and JDIs

  • Publish Collections can now include rendered video publishing
  • Export to Adobe Revel functionality
  • Enhanced output model for saving/storing settings applied in Web, Slideshow, Print and Book. Efforts are now clearly visible in Collections panel.
  • New Zoom ratios (1:8 and 1:16)
  • Mac version now includes a language selection option via preferences
  • Move multiple folders from volume to volume (Previously only single folder workflow was enabled)
  • White balance sample area is now zoom-level dependent
  • Noise reduction adjustment is always displayed regardless of zoom level
  • Collapse the tether toolbar down to the shutter button by Option or Alt clicking the close button
  • Module picker can be customized via right-click option
  • Filter and search images by a saved or unsaved metadata property

Additional Notes:

  • An important correction was made to the Lightroom credits. There’s a great tradition in the Photoshop family of listing babies born to team members during each cycle. We’ve previously omitted references to the fertility of the Lightroom team but have corrected that omission with Lightroom 4.
  • “Adobe plans to change the name of Adobe Carousel to Adobe Revel. We originally chose the name Adobe Carousel because it was descriptive of core functionality in the product, in that photographs were viewed in a circular manner, like a carousel. However, we now plan to offer additional photography solutions on this platform, including but not limited to the ‘carousel’ feature. Our rapidly expanding charter for this new platform requires a name that is less narrowly descriptive of the current product features.”­ – Chris Quek, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Adobe Revel

Additional Known Issues

General

  • Multiple exports of the same photo to Adobe Revel will create duplicate
  • assets within Revel
  • Import from iPhone can sometimes take a longer than expected
  • Wrong photo is displayed after round tripping between library and print.
  • If Tethered Capture Settings dialog is left open for very long periods of time, Lightroom
  • will hang when attempting to dismiss the dialog
  • Tethered capture can fail after computer wakes from sleep.

Books Module

  • Blurb books created through Lightroom are limited to 160 pages
  • Blurb only supports a subset of the languages that Adobe supports
  • Undoing one-click photo captions works sporadically and can cause
  • Lightroom to lag
  • Photos may be removed from layout pages when using the color and rating
  • filter in the Book Module on Windows only.
  • Updating metadata in Library does not automatically propagate the change
  • in metadata-based text in Book.
  • Adding captions to multiple photos at once causes Lightroom to lag.
  • Text on spine in Hard Cover books is not centered

Video

  • Black line can appear on right and bottom of videos when viewed in Loupe on Windows
  • Video frames are occasionally played out of order on certain AVCHD video files
  • There could be a memory leak when exporting over 500 videos at once

Map Module

  • Lightroom can crash if you try to assign too many 15,000+ photos to a Saved Location at the same time in Map (Mac only)
  • Having over 1,000 tagged photos in the Map Module causes a performance lag.
  • Reverse geocoding is not available in the public beta

Develop Module

  • The Auto Tone algorithm is still a work in progress. In some instances, Auto Tone in PV2010 will produce better results than Auto Tone in PV2012

Lightroom 3.6 Bugs – Fixed

  • Rapid advancement through the grid can make the preview processor die
  • Lightroom does not write to the correct metadata fields after editing capture time
  • Lightroom crashes when saving keyword to file
  • Certain JPG files appear to unsupported or damaged upon import into Lightroom
  • Publish to HD fails in LR 3.5 for publish collections created in 3.3 or earlier
  • Entering a custom aspect ratio in Quick Develop leaves the Crop Ratio menu black
  • Default scrolling behavior on OSX 10.7 makes non-scrolling mousewheel actions work backwards (Mac only)
  • Incorrect aspect ratio displayed in menu when crop is copy/pasted or applied via Previous button in the Develop module (Mac only)
  • Copy/Pasted Crop Aspect Ratio lost on edit
  • Copy/Pasted/Previous crop loses aspect ratio lock when adjusted in the Develop module
  • Tethering doesn’t work with the Nikon D3x
  • Error thrown when exporting video from slideshow and Lightroom is running as a 32-bit application

Camera Raw 6.6 Release Notes

These items have been FIXED in Camera Raw 6.6:

  • New camera profiles for Nikon D3, D3000, D3000s, and D700 to address issues with highlight posterization
  • ACR 6.5 clicking “Choose target folder button makes APD frozen (Mac only)
  • It’s possible that Lightroom crashes when saving keyword to file
  • Fuji S200 rendering highlights with green cast
  • Scrolling can perform too fast when using the trackpad
  • Snapshops don’t reset when in local corrections only with global corrections
  • Fixed issue red eye reduction for images converted to B & W.
  • Fixed issue with overcorrection of vignette.
  • Fixed issue with color noise reduction at extreme color temperatures.
  • Fixed issue with noise reduction when using local exposure adjustment.


Lightroom 3.6 and Camera Raw 6.6 available on Adobe Labs

Lightroom 3.6 and Camera Raw 6.6 are now available as Release Candidates on Adobe Labs.   The ‘release candidate’ label indicates that this update is well tested but would benefit from additional community testing before it is distributed automatically to all of our customers.  The final releases of Lightroom 3.6 and Camera Raw 6.6 may have additional corrections or camera support.

Bugs Corrected in the Lightroom 3.6 Release Candidate

The following bugs that were part of previous Lightroom 3 releases have been corrected. The team appreciates the very detailed feedback the community has provided on Lightroom 3 and we’re excited to correct a number of issues experienced by our customers. These issues have been FIXED

  • Lightroom 3.5 did not update the correct metadata fields in a file after adjusting the capture time of an image
  • Publish Collections created prior to Lightroom 3.4 designed to publish to a Hard Drive could fail to work properly in Lightroom 3.5
  • The Targeted Adjustment Tool provided the reverse value intended when used on OS X 10.7
  • The incorrect Aspect Ratio was displayed when Crop settings were Copy/Pasted or applied via Previous button (Mac Only)
  • In rare situations, Lightroom 3.4 and 3.5 would not be able to read certain JPEG files properly
  • Files with invalid date metadata could fail to import properly
  • Editing a crop that had previously been copied from another file would fail to retain the copied aspect ratio
  • Please provide feedback on your experience with the Lightroom 3.6 Release Candidate Bug Report Form.

Camera Raw 6.6 Release Notes

  • Selecting a destination folder could cause the Adobe Photo Downloader to become unresponsive
  • Prior custom tone curve adjustments may not appear in the tone curve panel until the panel is refreshed
  • Images with red eye corrections may have had color artifacts when converted to black and white
  • Please provide feedback on your experience with the Camera Raw 6.6 plug-in and the DNG Converter on the Camera Raw User to User forum.

Lightroom 3.5 Bugs – Fixed

  • Using the arrow keys to modify image adjustment settings lacked responsiveness
  • A Publish Collection targeting a hard drive on Windows would not behave properly if the designated folder was deleted from hard drive
  • After editing the capture time in Lightroom, “Date Time Digitized” was incorrectly changed. (Only “Date Time Original” should be modified)
  • On Windows computers, Lightroom would interpret the wrong time zone per the following customer report: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/xmp_metadatadate_has_wrong_time_zone
  • Changing Lightroom’s date created field to a date prior to 1933 resulted in unexpected values
  • Lightroom 3.2 introduced preview cache inefficiencies
  • GPS Altitude metadata was incorrectly excluded from files converted to DNG or exported as DNG files from Lightroom 3.4.1
  • For non-English language operating systems, folder names in the import dialog may not have been translating properly
  • When exporting images with the “Write Keywords as Lightroom Hierarchy” enabled, keywords with “Include on Export” deselected would still have been included on export

  • On Windows computers, using Shift + Scroll wheel to adjust the Adjustment Brush feather size, the expected result of the scroll wheel movement was reversed per the following feedback post
  • Lightroom would not provide the correct error message when attempting to delete photos published to Facebook
  • Lightroom would experience tether capture failures on computers utilizing OS X 10.6.8 and 10.7
  • Develop load time performance was inconsistent

Camera Raw 6.5 Release Notes
These items have been FIXED in Camera Raw 6.5:

  • Camera Raw did not allow write-back capability for the EXIF GPS properties.
  • The DNG File format did not support XMP Media Management.
  • A JPEG file with a specific characteristic was found to have a pink cast.
  • The undo command (Command+z) was failing to undo crop adjustments.
  • Single images marked for deletion were not moved to the trash.
  • A magenta color cast could have appeared on Nikon D7000 or Pentax K-5 images if the multi-exposure feature was used with raw capture.
  • Applying Sigma 10-20mm Lens Profile to Nikon D7000 raw files could have produced dark or black corners
  • Some EXIF fields of Panasonic raw files appeared to be blank in Bridge Metadata panel
  • Applying the exposure adjustment brush to a high ISO image could have caused excessive noise reduction correction to the entire image

Customers on the Mac platform utilizing OS X 10.7 will no longer have tethered support in Lightroom 3 for the following Canon cameras: (Please note that this issue is not specific to Lightroom 3.5 but is an OS X 10.7 limitation that was identified during this update)

Lightroom 3.5 and Camera Raw 6.5 available on Adobe Labs

Lightroom 3.5 and Camera Raw 6.5 are now available as Release Candidates on Adobe Labs.   The ‘release candidate’ label indicates that this update is well tested but would benefit from additional community testing before it is distributed automatically to all of our customers.  The final releases of Lightroom 3.5 and Camera Raw 6.5 may have additional corrections or camera support.

Bugs Corrected in the Lightroom 3.5 Release Candidate

The following bugs that were part of previous Lightroom 3 releases have been corrected. The team appreciates the very detailed feedback the community has provided on Lightroom 3 and we’re excited to correct a number of issues experienced by our customers. These issues have been FIXED

Camera Raw 6.5 Release Notes

  • GPS Altitude metadata was incorrectly excluded from files converted to DNG or exported as DNG files from Lightroom 3.4.1
  • When utilizing the Canon sRaw setting in a 5D Mk II camera with the white balance set to daylight a magenta cast could have appeared on the image
  • RECONYX images did not open properly in Camera Raw 6.4
  • When Camera Raw 6.4 or the DNG Converter 6.4 converted a raw file with a sidecar that includes GPS in the EXIF namespace (but no real GPS EXIF in the raw file) to DNG or another format (ex: JPEG), the Date Component of the GPS TimeStamp was lost
  • The DNG Converter 6.5 no longer supports PowerPC-based Mac computers.(Please see previous post)

Potential JPEG Bug in Lightroom 3.4 and Camera Raw 6.4

The Lightroom and Camera Raw team would like to inform you of a potentially severe bug that was introduced in the Lightroom 3.4 and Camera Raw 6.4 update.  Please note that this bug only impacts customers who are saving metadata to JPEG files with a rare characteristic.(JPEG files must have an unusually large block of private camera data included in the file to be susceptible to the bug*)   This scenario is so rare that we do not believe that it is necessary for customers who have already upgraded to revert to the previous version of Lightroom or Camera Raw.  However, the bug could cause image corruption which falls within our highest severity category of bugs.  The team believes it’s very important to notify you of the risk and provide an estimate of when we will be able to deliver a correction in the form of Lightroom 3.4.1 and Camera Raw 6.4.1.  We intend to have these updates available by Friday, May 27th.

If you do work with a significant number of JPEG files in Lightroom or Camera Raw and routinely update metadata(keywords, captions, etc) it would be prudent to wait for the updated release of Lightroom and Camera Raw.

The team would also like to thank Doug Cooper who reported this issue on the Lightroom Feedback Portal.  Rare bugs like this make it quite difficult to pinpoint the source of the problem or even create a reproducible scenario but thanks to Doug’s persistence we were able to track down this bug quickly.

*To date we’ve only found one camera that generates these large blocks of private data, the HP PhotoSmart R607.

Lightroom 3.4 Bugs – Fixed

  • Lightroom encountered issues presenting double-byte character metadata after the image was edited on Photoshop.com
  • Video files were allowed to be added to a SmugMug publish collection not capable of supporting video uploads
  • The up and down arrow keys did not work properly when trying to adjust a point tone curve with the Targeted Adjustment Tool
  • In a Flickr publish collection an error would occur when attempting to republish an image marked as “Hide from Public areas”
  • Images rotated once in a publish collection could have displayed inconsistent rotations between the grid view and the filmstrip (Windows only)
  • Mouse movements when a secondary window had been enabled would cause unnecessary processor activity
  • The SmugMug Smart Publish Collection dialog on a 1024×768 display could have closed without warning and prevented access to the main Lightroom window
  • Keyword completion was broken when spaces were included
  • Multiple Facebook publishing errors have been corrected in Lightroom 3.4
  • Publish collections did not work properly if the sort order is set to descending. (“Z to A”)
  • Cropped images could have momentarily appeared without a crop while moving from image to image in the Develop module
  • Image counts were not updating properly when nested collection sets were separated
  • If image files were located on an unavailable network volume, it might have taken several minutes for Lightroom to properly display the thumbnails in the grid view (Windows only)
  • Using the up/down arrow keys or the mouse wheel to adjust a parameter while the graduated filter is activated caused increments of plus or minus 100 instead of 1
  • Interlacing artifacts, and a slight magenta cast in the deepest shadows could have appeared on some high-contrast edges of Canon mRaw files.
  • Video files captured by an Apple iPhone and imported into Lightroom showed the incorrect capture date of December 31, 1903
  • In some instances, photos labeled as “Modified Photos to Re-Publish” in a Publish Collection would fail to be re-categorized as “Published” after a succesfull publish operation
  • A magenta color cast could have appeared on Nikon D7000 or Pentax K-5 images if the multi-exposure feature was used with raw capture
  • Updates have been made to Lightroom 3.4 to comply with Metadata Working Group standards
