George Jardine publishes new Lightroom 3 Tutorials

Adobe’s former Lightroom evangelist, George Jardine, has published a collection of video tutorials for Lightroom 3. This series focuses primarily on organizational and file management workflows in Lightroom’s import dialog and Library module. George also created an incredible series of Lightroom podcasts with industry influencers that are definitely worth a listen if you didn’t catch them when they were first released.

Lightroom 3.0 Now Available

After a well attended public beta(600k+ downloads of the beta), the team is proud to provide the final version of Lightroom 3.0.  This release has received significant feedback via the beta forums and we released an additional beta release(Lightroom 3 beta 2) to ensure that we addressed the top issues and solidified a Lightroom 3.0 release that is ready for daily use.

Here’s a quick list of what we’ve changed since the last public beta:

  • Profile-based lens correction that addresses:
    • Geometric lens distortion(i.e., barrel or pincushion)
    • Chromatic aberration
    • Vignette effects
  • Manual geometric lens correction
  • Horizontal and vertical perspective correction
  • Improved Web templates for updated color and design options
  • Additional Print templates to utilize the new creative layout options
  • New develop presets for creative B&W and Color adjustments
  • Focal length filtering available in the metadata filter
  • Updated SDK with publish collection functionality and access to collection and keyword metadata
  • Improved interactive responsiveness
  • Ability to upgrade Lightroom 1, Lightroom 2 catalogs as well as Lightroom 3 beta or Lightroom 3 beta 2 catalogs
    • Images edited in Lightroom 3 beta or Lightroom 3 beta 2 will migrate to Lightroom 3.0 with little to no visual adjustments.  Minor sharpening adjustments may appear.
  • Ability to migrate Photoshop Elements 6, 7 or 8 catalogs to Lightroom 3
  • Updated print resolution limits of 720ppi for local printing and 1200ppi for printing to a JPEG file.

There have already been detailed blog entries about what has been added to Lightroom 3 through the two beta release.(Lightroom 3 beta, Lightroom 3 beta 2) Below, I’ve provided a high level summary of the top enhancements across all three releases.  You can also watch a Lightroom 3 Overview video by Julieanne Kost.

  • Completely revamped import experience including import presets
  • Direct tethered capture support for popular Nikon and Canon DSLR cameras. (Full compatibility list here)
  • Updated architecture for improved interactive performance and the ability to manage larger image collections
  • Support for importing, managing, tagging and organizing common video formats, including DSLR video formats. (.MOV, .AVI, .MP4)
  • Dozens of smaller workflow enhancements throughout the application. (Detailed in the first Lightroom 3 beta blog post)
  • Tight integration with online photo sharing sites including Flickr.  A new Lightroom 3 SDK allows developers to connect to additional sites with the same high level of integration.
  • High quality image editing enhancements including
    • Dramatically improved Sharpening and Noise Reduction results
    • Additional post crop vignette styles with more photographic qualities
    • The ability to apply lens correction manually or using profiles for automated correction
    • Vertical and Horizontal transform controls
    • Creative grain controls
    • “Point curve” tone curve controls
    • Process Version switch to preserve historical processing style
  • Export slideshows as high quality H.264 video files that include selected music
  • Fully customizable multi-page print layouts
  • Flexible text or graphic watermark settings that can be applied to all output destinations

I’ll be posting links to various resources you can utilize to get acquainted with this new release in a separate post.

Thanks from the Lightroom Team and don’t forget to enjoy Rule Number 5!

Camera Raw 6.0 Now Shipping as part of CS5 (With Important Caveat)

Photoshop CS5 with the Camera Raw 6 plug-in is now shipping and available as a trial download. Camera Raw 6.0 is also available as part of Photoshop CS5 and includes numerous enhancements that have been previewed in the Lightroom 3 beta program. The new noise reduction, sharpening, grain and post-crop vignette tools in Camera Raw 6 have been highly anticipated updates for those that prefer to use the Camera Raw plug-in instead of Lightroom. I also previewed a lens correction solution that will be part of a Camera Raw 6.1 update shortly after Photoshop CS5 ships.(It will also be part of Lightroom 3)

There is one important caveat about the Camera Raw 6.0 release: The support for 9 additional cameras provided in the Camera Raw 5.7 and Lightroom 2.7 updates is not available in the Camera Raw 6.0 release. The camera models are listed below:

  • Canon EOS 550D (Digital Rebel T2i/ EOS Kiss X4 Digital)
  • Kodak Z981
  • Leaf Aptus-II 8
  • Leaf Aptus-II 10R
  • Mamiya DM40
  • Olympus E-PL1
  • Panasonic G2
  • Panasonic G10
  • Sony A450

Support for these cameras will be added in the upcoming Camera Raw 6.1 update. In the interim, you can use the free DNG Converter 5.7 (Mac, Win) to convert the files from these new cameras to a format readable by Camera Raw 6.0. The team apologizes for this temporary discrepancy in camera support but in our effort to provide the absolute latest camera support, we occasionally leapfrog the production process required to ship physical media around the world for Photoshop CS5 and the Creative Suite.(In developer terminology, Camera Raw 6.0 needed to be “baked” for Photoshop CS5 and the Creative Suite 5 release long before the Camera Raw 5.7 and Lightroom 2.7 update on April 20th so that testing and certification could be completed for the CS5 launch)

Preview of Lens Correction Solution for Camera Raw 6 and Lightroom 3

Below is a preview of lens correction technology that will be included in Lightroom 3 and the Camera Raw 6 plug-in that’s part of Photoshop CS5. This is an exciting development for our non-destructive editing technology and is designed to address lens correction via two methods: Lens Profiles and Manual Correction. The easiest application of lens correction is to apply the lens profile technology that encompasses geometric distortion(barrel and pincushion distortion), chromatic aberration and lens vignetting characteristics. A handful of lens profiles will be provided by default and a Lens Profile Creator Utility will be posted on Adobe Labs allowing photographers to create their own lens profiles using a simple procedure discussed in the video below. There are also manual distortion corrections that extend beyond traditional geometric distortion and provide horizontal and vertical transform adjustments.(As well as rotation, scale and crop to visible image data tools.) Please take a look at the preview video and provide your feedback!

  • Camera Raw 5.7 includes an updated demosaic algorithm
designed to provide compatibility with settings applied in Lightroom 3 beta 2.
  • Lightroom 2.7 also includes the same updated demosaic algorithm. The updated demosaic algorithm will appear as a subtle shift in noise characteristics at default values.
  • By default Camera Raw will display the image adjustments
exactly as performed in the Lightroom 3 beta 2 develop module.  However, at this time Camera Raw 5.7 is
unable to support further adjustments to the following settings or tools:
    • Highlight Priority and Color Priority post-crop vignette
    • Enhanced Luminance and Color Noise Reduction
    • Grain effects
    • Process Version

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on our Camera Raw 5.7 and Lightroom 2.7 Release Candidates.
