Lightroom 3.4.1 and Camera Raw 6.4.1 are now available on Adobe.com and through the update mechanisms available in Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3.  This update addresses an issue introduced in the Lightroom 3.4 and Camera Raw 6.4 release where, in very rare cases, JPEG files could become corrupted after editing the metadata in the file. This update also corrected another rare issue that could cause valid JPEG files to appear with incorrect color.

 

The Lightroom and Camera Raw team would like to inform you of a potentially severe bug that was introduced in the Lightroom 3.4 and Camera Raw 6.4 update.  Please note that this bug only impacts customers who are saving metadata to JPEG files with a rare characteristic.(JPEG files must have an unusually large block of private camera data included in the file to be susceptible to the bug*)   This scenario is so rare that we do not believe that it is necessary for customers who have already upgraded to revert to the previous version of Lightroom or Camera Raw.  However, the bug could cause image corruption which falls within our highest severity category of bugs.  The team believes it’s very important to notify you of the risk and provide an estimate of when we will be able to deliver a correction in the form of Lightroom 3.4.1 and Camera Raw 6.4.1.  We intend to have these updates available by Friday, May 27th.

If you do work with a significant number of JPEG files in Lightroom or Camera Raw and routinely update metadata(keywords, captions, etc) it would be prudent to wait for the updated release of Lightroom and Camera Raw.

The team would also like to thank Doug Cooper who reported this issue on the Lightroom Feedback Portal.  Rare bugs like this make it quite difficult to pinpoint the source of the problem or even create a reproducible scenario but thanks to Doug’s persistence we were able to track down this bug quickly.

*To date we’ve only found one camera that generates these large blocks of private data, the HP PhotoSmart R607.

The Camera Raw team recently provided a release candidate of the Camera Raw 6.4 plug-in and the DNG Converter 6.4 application. For those not familiar with the DNG Converter it’s a free, standalone application that is able to convert over 300 proprietary raw formats to the openly documented DNG file format.  When a new proprietary raw file format is released, essentially every new camera model with raw capability, we need to update the DNG Converter so that it’s able to convert that proprietary format to the DNG format.

The PowerPC(PPC) Mac systems, commonly referred to as G4 or G5 systems, represent a significantly different platform than the Intel-based solutions Apple started offering in January of 2006.  Due to the differences in software development environments, Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3 both dropped support for PowerPC systems in 2010.  However, we’ve extended PowerPC support for the DNG Converter into 2011 in order to ensure that customers who are still utilizing PowerPC Macs and are unable to upgrade to the latest version of Photoshop and Lightroom would be able to read raw files from the most recent camera models by converting the proprietary file to DNG and opening the DNG file in a previous version of Photoshop or Lightroom.  However, there is increasing overhead required to support the PowerPC code base in the DNG Converter so the final DNG Converter 6.4 update will be the last update to support PowerPC systems.

Lightroom 3.2 Release Notes

• Direct publishing to Facebook and SmugMug is now available
• Tethered capture now supports the Leica S2
• A larger list of corrected issues has been included as part of the Lightroom 3.2 Release Candidate notes. Additional issues have been address in the final Lightroom 3.2 update:

Camera Raw 6.2 Release Notes

• Scroll bar arrow performance has been improved
• Fixed: Slow Scrolling could occur when working with the Mac Trackpad and a multiple image selection

Adobe’s former Lightroom evangelist, George Jardine, has published a collection of video tutorials for Lightroom 3. This series focuses primarily on organizational and file management workflows in Lightroom’s import dialog and Library module. George also created an incredible series of Lightroom podcasts with industry influencers that are definitely worth a listen if you didn’t catch them when they were first released.

• Camera Raw 5.7 includes an updated demosaic algorithm

• Lightroom 2.7 also includes the same updated demosaic algorithm. The updated demosaic algorithm will appear as a subtle shift in noise characteristics at default values.
• By default Camera Raw will display the image adjustments
  exactly as performed in the Lightroom 3 beta 2 develop module.  However, at this time Camera Raw 5.7 is
  unable to support further adjustments to the following settings or tools:
• Highlight Priority and Color Priority post-crop vignette
• Enhanced Luminance and Color Noise Reduction
• Grain effects
• Process Version

The Lightroom 2.6 update included a bug that could cause Lightroom to crash unexpectedly when encountering certain raw files from the Leica M9 camera. This bug is an unfortunate consequence of attempting to tune our raw processing algorithms specifically for the M9 camera based on feedback on our Lightroom 2.6 Release Candidate. Due to the severity of this bug, we have released Lightroom 2.6.1 with a correction for the issue. This update is only applicable to photographers working with files from a Leica M9 camera.
