Lightroom Mobile for Android 1.4 now available and free!

In October, we released Lightroom 2.0 for iOS which made it possible to use Lightroom on iPhones and iPads without a paid subscription, and the response has been phenomenal. Today we’re excited to announce Lightroom for Android version 1.4, which adds the same free offering for Android users. The ability to use Lightroom for mobile without a paid subscription means that anyone can take advantage of the organizational, editing, and sharing abilities that Lightroom for mobile offers. Signing up for a free trial or logging in with a Creative Cloud subscription adds the ability to synchronize files and edits with Lightroom on a desktop or laptop, as well as with Lightroom Web.

We’re really excited to continue our focus on Android and pleased that Lightroom for mobile was recently listed by Google as one of the top apps of 2015. We’ve seen Android grow as a platform over the years, with billions of users around the world. As a photography platform, Android is making huge leaps and strides. New devices are being launched all the time with better and better cameras, and with the launch of Lollipop and the ability to shoot raw DNG files, Android provides one of the most powerful photography platforms available. Lightroom for Android supports raw DNG workflows making it possible to enhance images and take full advantage of all of the quality and details found in images captured on Android devices. If you’d like to read more about the exciting abilities that DNG can offer, check out this awesome blog post by our friend, Martin Evening.

We’re committed to making Lightroom Mobile for Android better and better and can’t wait to share some of the improvements we’re working on. Keep checking back with us, but for now, download Lightroom Mobile for Android 1.4 today!

Fixed Bugs:

  • Improved quality of spot healing. Specifically, the improvement in image quality occurs in how the patched content is blended into its surroundings.
  • Fixed bug with panorama merge that could cause blend artifacts. This bug usually manifested as a highly darkened area and highly brightened area separated by a straight line (not necessarily associated with image content).
  • Fixed bug that caused variable-exposure panorama merges to appear over exposed.
  • Fixed bug that caused panorama and HDR merges shot with some Leica cameras to appear black.
  • Fixed a crash in the Merge preview dialog when switching from Perspective to another projection mode.
  • Fixed option/alt-key visualization for Basic panel sliders in GPU mode.
  • Fixed lens profile automatic matching logic for SIGMA 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC HSM (Pentax K mount).
  • Improved distortion and vignette corrections for Canon EF 16-35mm F4L IS USM.
  • Improved speed of Dehaze feature. Specifically, minimize the delay that occurs when turning on Dehaze for the first time on a given image.

Sony a7r II uncompressed raw file support in Camera Raw and Lightroom

Sony recently released a firmware update for the Sony ILCE7RM2 (a7r II) camera that allows photographers to capture images in an uncompressed 14-bit raw file format.   If you’re already using Camera Raw 9.2  or Lightroom 2015.2/6.2, there’s no further action required and they will just work with the updated firmware in your Sony a7r ii.

Lightroom 6.2 Import Update

Update: Lightroom 6.3/CC 2015.3 is now available which includes the previous import functionality, bug fixes and added camera/lens profile support.

I’d like to thank our customers for their patience while the team reviewed several options for restoring import workflows and addressing quality in Lightroom. We can now confirm that, in our next dot release, we will restore the previous import experience. We are still working on details and timing. In the meantime, if you need to restore previous import functionality prior to the next update, please refer to this document on how to roll back to Lightroom 6.1.1 (https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/roll-back-to-prior-update.html).

We will continue to investigate ways to improve the ease of use of our photography products and will do so via an open dialog, with both existing and new customers.

Regards,
Tom Hogarty

Lightroom 6.2 Release Update and Apology

Update #2: Lightroom 6.3/CC 2015.3 is now available which includes the previous import functionality, bug fixes and added camera/lens profile support.

Update: We plan to restore the old import experience in our next update. In the meantime, if you need to restore previous import functionality, or are experiencing other issues with Lightroom 2015.2.x/6.2.x, we recommend you roll back to the Lightroom 2015.1.1/6.1.1 update until things are reverted and corrected. See instructions here: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/roll-back-to-prior-update.html

I’d like to personally apologize for the quality of the Lightroom 6.2 release we shipped on Monday.  The team cares passionately about our product and our customers and we failed on multiple fronts with this release.  In our efforts to simplify the import experience we introduced instability that resulted in a significant crashing bug.  The scope of that bug was unclear and we made the incorrect decision to ship with the bug while we continued to search for a reproducible case(Reproducible cases are essential for allowing an engineer to solve a problem).   The bug has been fixed and today’s update addresses the stability of Lightroom 6.

The simplification of the import experience was also handled poorly.  Our customers, educators and research team have been clear on this topic: The import experience in Lightroom is daunting.  It’s a step that every customer must successfully take in order to use the product and overwhelming customers with every option in a single screen was not a tenable path forward.  We made decisions on sensible defaults and placed many of the controls behind a settings panel.  At the same time we removed some of our very low usage features to further reduce complexity and improve quality.  These changes were not communicated properly or openly before launch.  Lightroom was created in 2006 via a 14 month public beta in a dialog with the photography community.  In making these changes without a broader dialog I’ve failed the original core values of the product and the team.

The team will continue to work hard to earn your trust back in subsequent releases and I look forward to reigniting the type of dialog we started in 2006.

Sincerely,

Tom Hogarty and the Lightroom Management Team

Update October 12, 2015:  With 432 comments and counting I just wanted to let folks know that I’m reading all of the feedback and the team will provide an update this week.

Update on Lightroom 2015.2 / Lightroom 6.2 Release

The Lightroom team wanted to let the community know that we’re investigating some critical performance and crasher bugs, and will be issuing an update shortly to address them.

note – Lightroom 2015.2.1 / 6.2.1 has been release to address the critical performance and crasher bugs.  Please update if you have been running into issues with performance and crashes in 2015.2

If you are experiencing crashing or slowdowns, please try the following:

  • Go to Lightroom > Preferences.
  • Click on the General tab
  • Uncheck “Show ‘Add Photos’ Screen”
  • Restart Lightroom

I think it’s important to provide some context to why we made changes to Import.  Over the years we’ve done extensive studies of customers interested in Lightroom.  The studies have been comprised of people passionate about photography and who use their cameras as a creative outlet.  In short, their motivations share the same motivations as people who already love Lightroom.

We visited them in their homes, and asked them to install, launch and use Lightroom.  Since this was their first interaction with Lightroom, we were interested in observing specifically where they encountered obstacles, and therefore where we needed to focus our attention.

Customers were universally unable to decipher the Import dialog without getting frustrated. Some people pushed forward, bolstered by spending time searching the web for help.  They might have been successful in importing files, but they didn’t feel successful.  Others gave up, deciding that Lightroom might not be the right product for them.

The previous Import experience literally made people push back from their computers in frustration.  Keeping the existing Import experience isn’t an option, and we needed to evolve the Import experience.

We’ve heard great feedback on the changes, and we’ve always evolved the Lightroom product with feedback from photographers and look forward to continue to evolve the experience going forward with your feedback in mind.

Please keep the feedback coming!

We’re happy to announce the immediate availability of major updates across the Lightroom ecosystem today!

Release Notes

New Features – Lightroom desktop

Dehaze as a Local Adjustment*

We added Dehaze as a global adjustment in the Lightroom CC 2015.1 release and are excited to see the widespread interest in the feature.  We wanted to extend the functionality, and I’m happy to announce that you can now apply Dehaze as a Local Adjustment.  This means that you can use Dehaze with the Radial Filter, Graduated Filter and Local Adjustment Brush.

* Please note that this feature is not available in the standalone version of Lightroom 6

Revamped Import

We redesigned the Import experience to make finding and importing your photos easier and more visual.  The redesign was driven by our desire to make the import workflow more explicit and clear.  The workflow is 1. Select a source, 2. Select images 3.  Choose any import settings (optional) and 4. Import.

The revamped Import experience is based on customer feedback and we’re excited to hear what you think.

  1.  Select a Source:  There is a new “Add Photos” screen which scans to identify the potential locations for photos on your hard drive.  You can also easily select from a folder, a connected camera (via USB cable), a memory card, external hard drive, or Photoshop Elements catalog.
  2. Select images:  The Import Dialog has been redesigned.  Your source will already be selected (you choose it in step 1) so you can specify which images to import.  We recommend importing all.
  3. Choose any import settings (optional):  While there isn’t a need to change the default settings, you can open the gear icon (on the top right) to adjust and change import settings.
  4. Hit the import button.

Improvements to “Import from Photoshop Elements” feature

In addition to Import, we’ve revamped the Import from Photoshop Elements experience.  Now you can migrate the images from your Photoshop Elements catalog into Lightroom easily.  To do so, click on the Photoshop Elements icon in the “Add Photos” screen (step 1 from above).  Select the Elements catalog and click the Import button.  Lightroom will handle the rest for you automatically.

Camera Raw 9.2 is now available

Camera Raw 9.2 is now available through the update mechanism in Photoshop CC and the Creative Cloud application.

As mentioned in an update to our camera support policy here, Camera Raw 9.2 is only available in Photoshop CC or later.  Customers using older versions of Photoshop can utilize the DNG Converter for continued camera support.

New Features in Camera Raw 9.2

Dehaze as a Local Adjustment

We added Dehaze as a global adjustment in the Camera Raw 9.1 release and are excited to see the widespread interest in the feature.  We wanted to extend the functionality, and I’m happy to announce that you can now apply Dehaze as a Local Adjustment.  This means that you can use Dehaze with the Radial Filter, Graduated Filter and Local Adjustment Brush.

Birds Eye View

This is a fast way to navigate across the image, especially when zoomed in. It is similar to the existing feature in the Photoshop app itself. Here’s how to use it:

  • Press and hold H.
  • Click and drag to set the position of the zoom rectangle as desired.  The zoom rectangle is shown as an outline around the cursor.
  • Release the mouse. The image zooms to the area chosen in the previous step. The selected tool remains unchanged.
  • If you start in Fit View mode or smaller, the zoom rectangle will represent 100% pixel view (1:1). This is a quick way to zoom to 1:1 at a specific part of the image (such as a person’s face, or other area of interest).
  • If you start zoomed in, then after you release the mouse you’ll return to the same zoom level. For example, if you start at 200%, then after releasing the mouse you’ll be back at 200%.
  • Birds Eye View is only available when GPU is enabled.

Usability improvements to modal tools

Modal tools include Spot removal, red eye correction, local adjustment brush, graduated filter and radial filter.

We’ve changed the behavior of the return and escape buttons when using a modal tool.  In the past, they would dismiss the modal tool.  The new behavior is:

  • If there is an active correction typing return or escape will deselect that correction.
    • In the case of the three local correction tools (brush, graduated filter, radial filter), the radio button at the top of the panel will get set to “New” so that the next click will create a new correction. This saves a bit of cursor movement; you no longer need to move over to the panel in order to start work on a new correction.
  • If there is no active correction, the Zoom tool becomes selected. This matches the behavior of the Crop tool.

Fixed Bugs:

  • Improved alignment results for HDR and Panorama merges. Note that this improved alignment technique may produce different results from merges in earlier Camera Raw versions, even for merges that had acceptable alignment.
  • Improved image quality for Sony A7R II for raw files captured using long exposures.
  • Fixed missing Camera Matching Profiles for Olympus Stylus 1 and 1s
  • Improve quality of display color management in GPU mode. Color and tone gradations are now smoother.
  • Improve quality of image while using Scrubby Zoom.
  • Fixed intermittent crash when using Red Eye tool.
