Lightroom mobile for Android phones now available

Tonight we’re announcing the immediate availability of Lightroom mobile for Android phones.

Lightroom mobile extends your existing workflows beyond the desktop, allowing you to utilize your Android phone to review and edit your images and have the changes sync back to your Lightroom catalog at home, including:

  • access images in your Lightroom catalog
  • make selects, reject unworthy photos
  • apply a preset
  • fine tunes your images using the Basic panel
  • import new photos directly from the Gallery

Once you’ve told Lightroom a collection of pictures should be sent to Lightroom mobile, the process is handled automatically and the pictures will become available on your Android phone once it is connected to the internet. Any changes you make in Lightroom mobile will be automatically synced and updated back to the Lightroom catalog on your desktop.

Lightroom mobile utilizes Smart Previews to provide raw editing functionality on the go.  Smart Previews are:

  • Based on the DNG file format
  • Limited to 2560 pixels on the long edge
  • Smaller versions original raw files
  • Can be used to make adjustments even when the original files aren’t available locally
  • Adjustments made to Smart Previews are applied to the original when the original files are available

NOTE – It may take up to 24 hours for Lightroom mobile to be available in your local Google Play app store.

How to get started:

Download the latest version of Lightroom 5

Lightroom mobile is a companion to Lightroom desktop. Please update to the latest version of Lightroom 5 using either the Creative Cloud app or by clicking on the “Help-> Check for Updates” menu option.

  • The crop overlay displayed an intermediate step when progressing through images in the filmstrip with overlay displayed.
  • The lens profile for the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 would not auto-select when using Lens Profile Corrections.
  • ICC profiles resulted in incorrectly clipped shadows and blacks in Lightroom.  Note that this is related to the issue identified here and only occurs on Mac OSX 10.9 and later

  • Improved quality of Camera Matching color profiles for the Nikon D810. Fixes visible banding issues with the Camera Standard, Camera Vivid, Camera Landscape, and Camera Monochrome profiles.
  • Context menu (right click on PC or control+click on Mac) was disabled for images contained in Lightroom mobile collections.
  • Fixed issue that prevented Lightroom 5 from reading Photoshop Elements 13 libraries.
  • Cover images set by Lightroom mobile were sometimes incorrectly reset by Lightroom desktop.
  • Sync with Lightroom mobile sometimes stalled when asset is added to same album on both LrM and LrD and later deleted
  • Resolved issue that caused Lightroom to crash when creating a Print and saving it to a mounted DVD directly inside Lightroom.
  • Publishing images to Behance using the Behance Publish Service has been restored.

Aperture import plugin now available

As promised in a blog post here, we are proud to introduce the Aperture and iPhoto import plugin for Lightroom 5.  The plugin allows Aperture and iPhoto customers to migrate their images and key metadata (such as keywords, events, project structure) into Lightroom catalogs in a seamless way.

For a limited time, Aperture users who subscribe to the Creative Cloud Photography plan get a free 3-month membership to KelbyOne training.  Please visit here for more details

EDIT: The Aperture and iPhoto import plugin is now integrated into Lightroom 5. Please ensure that you are using Lightroom 5.7 or later by using the Help->Check for updates menu option in Lightroom 5.

Installation:  There are 2 ways to install the Aperture plugin.

Creative Cloud members – please visit the Adobe Add-ons page here and follow the instructions to install:

  1. Ensure that you’re using Lightroom 5.6.  You can check your Lightroom version by going to Help->System Info inside Lightroom.  If not using Lightroom 5.6, please update to the 5.6.
  2. Close Lightroom.
  3. Click on the Install button on Adobe Add Ons.  This will launch the Creative Cloud Application, which will download and install the plugin.
  4. Launch Lightroom.

Note – if you are unable to install, first try restarting the Creative Cloud application.  If that does not work, then please follow the instructions listed for perpetual customers below.

Lightroom 5 Perpetual Customers – please follow the manual installation instructions below.

note – we’ve updated the plugin below, so please try this one if you reported problems earlier.

  1. Ensure that you’re using Lightroom 5.6.  You can check your Lightroom version by going to Help->System Info inside Lightroom.  If not using Lightroom 5.6, please update to the 5.6.
  2. Download the plugin zip file to a known location (such as your desktop)
  3. Double click on the downloaded zip file to extract it.
  4. Navigate to the Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom folder.  To do so, use the Go menu item within Finder.  Please note that the Library folder is hidden by default and that you will need to hold down the Option/Alt key to make it visible.
  5. Check to see if there is a Modules folder.  If not, please create this folder.
  6. Copy the extracted aperture_iphoto_importer.lrplugin file to the Modules folder.
  7. Start Lightroom.

Download link ->  aperture_iphoto_importer v1.0.1

Updated Download link -> here

Usage

1.  Open the Plugin

For Aperture Customers:  click on File -> Plugin Extras -> Import from Aperture Library

For iPhoto Customers:  Click on File -> Plugin Extras -> Import from iPhoto Library

2.  Verify that the Library location is correct.

3.  Click on the “Options” button to see additional Options.  Here you can select the options that work best with your personal setup.

4.  Hit the Import button.

Expected Behavior

The Aperture/iPhoto plug-in is expected to import the following data from an Aperture or iPhoto library into a Lightroom Catalog:

  • Flags
  • Star Ratings
  • Keywords
  • GPS Data
  • Faces (face naming tags are mapped to keywords)
  • Rejects (files designated as Rejects in Aperture will be imported into Collections > From Aperture > Photos Rejected in Aperture)

–        Manually select the profile and choose “Save New Lens Profile Defaults” in the Setup menu on the Profile tab. From then on, the lens should automatically select when the profile is enabled.

Release Notes

  • Sony DSC-RX100 III
  • Sony A7S (ILCE-7S)
  • Sony Alpha SLT-A77 II (ILCA-77M2)

Camera Raw 8.6 Release Candidate  introduces the following new features for Photoshop CC customers:

– Improved performance when batch processing images via the Save button (in Camera Raw) and when converting images to DNG (in DNG Converter).  The performance improvements are available only in 64 bit systems.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fix crash on launch in some cases on Hi DPI (Retina) systems.
  • Fix crash when opening some Sigma SD9 raw files.
  • Fix issue with JPEG images saved by Camera Raw not readable in some external applications.
  • Fix automatic lens profile selection for Leica M (Typ 240) when using most recent firmware version.
  • Fix issue with some Hasselblad H5D-50c and H5D-60 3FR raw images appearing slightly too dark. Unfortunately, this fix may affect the appearance of existing images captured with this combination of settings. It is recommended that you (1) purge the Camera Raw cache via the Camera Raw Preferences dialog, and (2) review previously captured images for unexpected brightness changes.

Thanks!

What happens to Lightroom after my membership ends?

[note]: We recently updated to Lightroom 6.0.  When you’re subscription ends in Lr CC / Lr6, you will continue to have access to the Library, Slideshow, Web, Book and Print Modules as described below.

Since the launch of the Creative Cloud, Adobe has engaged in an ongoing dialog with the photographic community. We’ve tackled mobile workflows, provided ongoing enhancements and lastly, provided a membership plan tailor made for all levels of photographers. With the latest update to Lightroom 5.5 I believe we’ve also addressed a lingering concern in the community: What happens to my photographs after my membership ends?  With Lightroom 5.5, at the end of a membership, the desktop application will continue to launch and provide access to the photographs managed within Lightroom as well as the Slideshow, Web, Book or Print creations that we know many photographers painstakingly create. The Develop and Map modules have been disabled in order to signal the end of the membership and the need to renew in order to receive Adobe’s continuous innovation in those areas. Access to Lightroom mobile workflows will also cease to function. We hope this meets the expectations of our customers and we look forward to an ongoing dialog.
