Raw support in Lightroom and Camera Raw

There have been a number of questions around raw support for Lightroom and the Camera Raw plug-in.(ACR) Below is a list of new support by version. (Skip the background if you just need to know if your camera is supported)

Background
It’s a busy time of year for the team as we just released Lightroom 4, the Photoshop CS6 beta was introduced last week and some of the new flagship cameras are beginning to have broader availability.  Our consistent goal is to provide new camera support as quickly as possible.  We also try to keep it simple by aligning Lightroom and ACR updates both in terms of timing and camera support.  However for the few months around the launch of Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6, we forfeited alignment in favor of getting support out as quickly as possible.  That’s why the ACR6.7 release candidate supports the 5D Mk III but the Lightroom 4.0 release does not.   You’ll also note that ACR7 available with Photoshop CS6 beta, is lagging the most in updated camera support.  This is based on when we lock down or “bake” the code for each release.   Even though ACR7 was only released last week it was “baked” before Lightroom 4.0 and Camera Raw 6.7.  Similarly, Lightroom 4.0 was finalized before Camera Raw 6.7.  We’ll get Lightroom and Camera Raw in sync soon but in the interim, here’s the latest incremental support list for each product, relative to Camera Raw 6.6 and Lightroom 3.6:

Additional Notes:

  • If you need access to the latest camera support and your current Adobe product does not have support, the DNG Converter 6.7 is a free application that will convert that latest camera support above from a proprietary format to the DNG format that can be read in earlier versions of Adobe’s products. (The DNG Converter is the second option on the download page of the 6.7 release candidate site)
  • For those that have been asking, Canon EOS 5D Mk III support will be added to the next update to Lightroom this week.
  • Lightroom 3.6 is the last update to Lightroom 3.  New camera support will only be added to Lightroom 4 going forward.
  • And yes, we are aware of the existence of the Fuji X-Pro1 camera and like all new camera models we are working to add support as quickly as possible.

          It’s coming in a future update to LR, and we can’t comment on any ETAs at this point.

  2. I’m sorry but expecting people to buy new software everytime they buy a new camera is unacceptable. I just bought a new Nikon D800 and now you tell me that I have to buy a new version of PS or Lightroom? I don’t need a new version of PS or LR.

    There is no excuse for not adding new camera support to older version of your software.

    So, now I need to buy new software to processs my RAW files. Why should I buy Adobe?

      I find this horrible. I really have zero need for upgraded Lightroom, other than to process images from my rented D800 I am trying out this weekend. Yet I can’t. Shame on Adobe.

    2. Ditto. I have had my D800 for a month and have not yet seen any of my RAWs on screen, as I only have Lightroom 3. I like Lightroom 3. I would rather not buy yet another update, unless LR4 is *really* a major upgrade… I assume Adobe’s just hoping that with this latest generation of camera bodies coming out, it’s going to force mass software sales? I suppose from a business standpoint, it’s smart… as a working photographer it’s frustrating.

    3. I don’t want to upgrade to LR4 just because I bought a new camera, the Nikon D4.
      And also, reports from the field say LR4 is super slow, and I can’t bog my workflow down even more.

      This is ridiculous that you’re not supporting the new cameras on LR3.

  3. I agree with Greg. While I love Lightroom, this is a bit disappointing that you won’t be supporting a new camera. I paid good money for this software, and I should be able to use it with my new camera. You’re going to upset a good amount of customers by not supporting Lightroom 3 with the 5D Mark III support.

    If the software works, why upgrade it? So patch it so we don’t have to. Had the Mark III come out 2 months earlier, it would have been supported with Lightroom 3.

  5. Greg, do you know that Nikon does also need to update its converter each time they release a camera?

    Users of Pentax, Leica, Ricoh and other brands outputting DNG directly from their camera don’t have that issue. Ask your camera maker to support DNG, and you could even stick with ACR 2.4 in CS1 (and miss all power and functionality of the newer versions of Camera Raw)

    Supporting older versions means more Quality Engineering tests to be done, and thus slower releases of updates.

  6. I too am upset that Lightroom 3.6 will not support my new camera. I am running XP
    on my machine which has given no trouble. So not only are you forcing me in to upgrade to Lightroom 4 but Adobe is also causing to me upgrade my operating software because lightroom 4 is not supported by XP. I believe your marketing department believe we have unlimited funds.

      1. If you shoot multiple thousands of images in a day, and get home at teh end of the day, it’s enough of a task to download, back up, and import. Converting those thousands of RAWs into DNG’s is not really a step I want to do, or have time to do.

  7. There is no earthly reason not to add new camera support to Lightroom 3.6, except to force users to migrate to 4.0. Since that requires all Win XP users to migrate to Win 7 right now, that’s a pretty arrogant position for Adobe. I’ve felt uneasy about become dependent on Lightroom to maintain my catalog and RAW edits. Now I am much more uneasy. I’ll move to Win 7, but look hard for an alternative to Lightroom.

      1. This is not about new features in ACR, I will sure pay for that – if I need it!
        But its ridiculous to not support new cameras in older products. With a new camera I need new LR, new PSE and perhaps a new OS!?

  8. I would think that the decent honorable thing for Adobe to do is go one version of Lightroom back from the current version when a new camera is released. Thus people would have support for their 5DIII and D800 in LR3. After all some people have copies of LR3 that are less than one year old, and an upgrade to LR4 may also intail an upgrade to a new computer as well. Since if I understand correct LR4 will not run on XP based computers, which is the boat that I am in as I have many legacy hardware items that only have drivers for XP Such as a Nikon Coolscan 9000 film scanner and an ALPs 5000 printer. I ordered a new D800 last monday and just cannot upgrade camera, computer and software all at once. Besides I have a ripping XP machine with SATA3 and dual SSD drives running raid 0. Things a beast. As it stands now i will not be able to use this computer for my new D800 and I am feeling a little abused by Adobe. You will not keep me as a customer if I feel abused for long. John Acton

      This is a rip off from Adobe, not to support the new D800/E with LR3.6. Just another way to outdate technology for a buck.

      My whole collections of photos are in the LR3 catalogue and I will now use Nikon View NX2 to download my images. What a bummer.

  9. smangali’s link above for “the latest version of DNG converter” would be an irritating work-around for the lack of LR 3 support, but it’s a release candidate not a final version. Actually, I don’t find that too dismaying for a standalone utility like DNG converter (unlike ACR). But smangali’s link, which offers downloads of both the release candidates, says only that ” The Camera Raw 6.7 update includes support for many new cameras and lens profiles,” with no mention of what the release Candidate for DNG Converter does or does not support. I suppose I can download it and see what it does. But if Adobe gave a rat’s *** about their existing customers, would it be too much trouble simply to say what the Converter release candidate does or doesn’t do??

  10. So the Canon 1Dx – and Nikon D4 and D800, neither which have been released yet are supported natively in LR4, but the 5d mkiii which I’ve just purchased isn’t?

    Will I have to wait for LR 5 and spend another 100 quid?

  11. Ok, so I just bought Lightroom 3 about a month ago, now you’re telling me I have to have Lightroom 4 to have native D800 raw support. Otherwise, I have to add another layer to my process! So, Who do I talk to about getting my money back for LR3 so I can use it to get LR4.

    1. If you purchased LR3 after 2/6/12 Adobe is providing a free upgrade to LR4 via their tech support division.

  14. I can understand your decision to stop updating Lightroom 3.6…but I must say it is a real bad new. You offer options to move from Lightroom 3 to 4 at a decent price…but since LR 4 will not run on XP…it means changing LR version, changing Windows version and computer…something I cannot afford

  18. I just purchased the FUJI X PRO-1 and this camera is a beast. I love it. But I can’t navigate raw files in LR yet and this is a deal breaker for me. I love LR, but if updates aren’t more encompassing I may have to change platforms. Adobe, FUJI, can’t we all just get along?

  19. Me to have just buy Lightroom 3.6 two months ago. Sins last week, I have a Fuijifilm X-S1 camera. I cannot use my Lightroom for downloading RAW dates. It is a shame I have to buy Lightroom 4 now again. At least Adobe can offer me the L 4 version for a better price!

  21. So having just bought Lightroom 3 less than twelve months ago I now have to buy LR4 because I have a D800. This economic climate is hard enough for a startup business without being bullied by adobe to buy more software, while there is nothing technically wrong withthe version I have. I can get by with bridge converting to dng and still use LR3 for the time being, even though it will increase my workflow.

  22. I agree with all of the above. If you want me to keep buying Adobe products, provide a service first, not hold me hostage to an update, just to get support for a fantastic new camera, the Mark III 5d, which I bought. I don’t need or want Lightroom 4.0. I’m sorry but 3.0 works just fine for me. Take a cue from Apple, you need to charge less and offer more. And remember that no matter how hard you try, the camera is more important than your software. There is no Adobe without the Camera. I predict Lightroom 4.0 sales will be flat and you will lose many, many customers with this strategy to basically screw people. I am truly sorry the world is changing for Adobe, but basically it is about time anyway. Many, many software companies have gotten rich off licensing fees, but the public is finally aware of open source. Good luck.

  30. According to Adobe, ACR 6.7 (Candidate) supports the camera RAW for the new Canon
    Mark III, but I downloaded it and it does not seem to work, very frustrating. Finally I got
    the DNG converter and could, for the first time in a week, see my pictures from my new
    camera in raw! By the way, this was in Adobe Photoshop 5.1 (with the new updates of
    5.5 Manager and Device Central.

  32. From what I read about 43% of PC users still utilizing the XP operating system. Many people., including myself, recently purchased Lightroom 3.6. Many people, including myself, have recently purchased a new cameras (Canon G1-X in my case) which have no RAW support in either Lightroom or Elements 9 and apparently there is no plan to update RAW support in either application. I believe it is unreasonable for Adobe to sell an application that can only be used for a few months and then discontinue support with no compensation for the purchaser. I also feel that with 43% of PC user still on the XP Operating System that Adobe should continue support. I may have purchased my last Adobe product.

  33. Just purchased a 5d Mk3, I too am a bit annoyed about an Adobe CS software upgrade for raw files. Happy with the CS version I have for now. The software that came with the camera is quite usable, will try that path for a while now instead of upgrading.

  34. To all the whiners. ACR is at least half the functionalty of LR if not more, and as one who used to run a company that wrote and maintained a lot of software, I can assure you keeping LR up to date isn’t cheap. The LR upgrade costs less than a decent flash card so if you are really in the market for a 5DIII or a D800 (not to mention the glass), the LR upgrade is in the noise. If you are just dreaming about one of these cameras and whining about the extra stuff you might have to buy if you could afford the camera, then you are wasting everybody else’s time. Sorry for being so blunt, but software ain’t free to maintain and LR is an awesome program for the money.

  35. That’s just disappointing. I just got my LR 3.6 about 6 months ago, and now, I need to upgrade for it? That’s just a bad customer service.

    1. I’m with you on this JA…… I’ve had LR3 for only 12 months or so…. worked fine with my Canon 5d. Now I’ve just bought a second camera Canon G1X….around $650, only to find if I want to use LR, I have to upgrad to LR4…..but now I hear people having difficulty uploading 5D files with LR4.. Well as an advanced amateur, all I can say is “THANK GOODNESS FOR COREL AFTER SHOT PRO ” .
      I’d be happy to pay $10 for a “plug-in” for the G1X raw file converter….but another $100 is downright ludicrous…. They’ve lost me for two reasons now….the other being their lousy customer service !!!

  36. I agree with other posts. Having only had Lightroom for several months I am so disappointed in your lack of support for the Canon 5D Mark 3. I’ve been loving LR but don’t see why after only a couple of months using it I have to spend more to use it with my new camera.

    I have an x-pro1, a D7000, and a D800. I’m thinking it may be easier to switch software, to the first developer that can handle all three cameras, than to switch to an inferior piece of hardware.

  42. On the support for previous versions: Most software vendors continue to update the previous version of software up to a point, depending on their software life cycle. Some update multiple versions back. It’s a shame that Adobe won’t add support for new cameras to Lightroom 3.6 for at least a year. I guess they figure that as long as there is the DNG option, they aren’t forcing anyone to upgrade their software. But a major feature of the software is that it supports native RAW camera formats, and since the jump from 3.6 to 4 drops support for Windows XP, they really should support their 3.6 users for a little longer.

  45. LR4 says it supports RAW D800 but Adobe is being dishonest because it won’t print any modified NEF images. I called tech support and they said printing of the modified NEFs, letting LR4 manage color, is NOT SUPPORTED. WTF! This is really dishonest of Adobe. I upgraded to LR4 because of its advertised D800 support and all it’s good for is viewing the images on screen unless you convert them and lose gamut, detail, etc.

    Be truthful with users, Adobe, and tell the whole story until it fully supports RAW for the D800.

  46. I think that this will start impacting on Adobe unless they supply plugins- or at least charge a small amount to get say a D4 Plugin for CS4 or whatever new camera comes onto the market

    I also shoot with a PhaseOne so I upgraded to CaptureOne Pro, you just download the latest version (free) and simple- you can work with the D4 D800, 5Diii, X1Pro.

    I have heard of a lot of professional photographers who are fed up with Adobe and the issue of totally upgrading and changed to CaptureOne.

    Hopefully Adobe are taking note of the dissatisfied customers- but I doubt it……

  47. I have purchased Lightroom 4.
    However, it is not a viable option as it will not load into my studio Computer which is an iMac and is intel, but I guess not new enough version. Since LR 3.6 can’t read my D800E’s .NEF files what are my options? I did download the DNR converter, but it too will not update to a version that will read the D800’s NEF files. I don’t know if this again is due to the computer model or not. I hope there another option other than buying Nikons software (Which will work on the computer. I’m trying the trial at the moment) or getting a new computer? Seems like Adobe should provide a solution for people like me that can’t solve the problem by purchasing the current version of software. Would it really be so much to ask that LR 3.6 be able to work with my new camera?

  48. So, I downloaded Capture One, and guess what? It works just fine with my iMac. It doesn’t require me to buy a new computer. So that’s the just of it. I can either buy a new computer in order to use LR4 because LR3.6 (less than a year old) won’t be updated to recognize a current camera, the D800. Nice thought process Adobe. Make people so angry that they search out alternative software. I want my money back!

  58. I’ve been a user of Lightroom since Version 1. I purchase each upgrade, and the latest at $79 is a bargain. Adobe has been great about adding support for new cameras during the minor release steps, and anyone that got a copy on close out right before a new version comes should have known better. To sum up… thanks to all on the Lightroom team for another great release, and giving existing users a great deal on the upgrade.

  60. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE have 5DMIII support for Lightroom 3.6….I do not want to upgrade to LR4 because I have TONS of presets that I have purchased. They will not work in LR3 correctly. I feel this is not fair or good customer service. Just please update it to work in LR 3.

  63. Does anyone have an idea when FujiFilm’s X-Pro-1 will have RAW release so I can use the camera? I guess for now I have a $2700.00 brick. You would think that Professional cameras would enjoy quick integration into Lightroom. After all isn’t Lightroom designed for professionals that use professional equipment?

    Adobe and Camera Manufactures need to get their act together. There is no excuse for these delays. Included is the lack of information on a release date. Maybe I should tell my clients the same thing, It’s going to take months before I get back to you, even though you paid the invoice.

  64. I need tethered support for the D800. Please! Please read this and understand it is a major issue for me. I’ve been using LR since it was beta software and was super excited when it finally supported tethered shooting. To not have tethered shooting with the D800 by now is just plain silly.

    Why stop at upgrading Lr3 to D800 compability?

    Why not Lr2? Lr1?

    This exact same thing happens with ALL conversion software (definitely including Capture One!): at some point a line has to be drawn under old versions of the software.

    And as to the tethering question, the answer – as has been posted in forums all over the internet umpteen times – is that Nikon (and Canon for the 5D Mk III) have to release their SDKs before third party converters can update tethering to work on new cameras.

    Guess what? That’s true of Capture One too.

  66. I just bought the Nikon D800 and like most of you, I was displeased that I could not view my D800 NEF files in LR 3.6, but I did find a workaround if you also have PS CS5. If you do, open up Adobe Bridge CS5 and go to File –> Get Photos From Camera, and convert those D800 NEFs to DNG files. You should point them to the folder where you save your LR3 files. Once the DNG files are converted, go to LR3 and under the Library tab and select the folder which holds your DNG files, right-click on that folder and tell it to Synchronize Folder, and then you should see your DNG files in LR3. I hope this helps. It worked for me!

  67. The DNG 7.1 Release Candidate will support the Nikon D800 as will the Camera Release Candidate 7.1.
    I own a D800 and convert all my images to the DNG format since the file size is about 20% smaller which is significant with the large file sizes generated by the D800.
    Personally, I use LR 4 and love it. The upgrade fee is very reasonable and you can an additional 15% discount if you’re a NAPP member, along with a huge number of other discounts.
    I can understand the frustration with constant upgrades, but only if the functional features don’t merit the expense. In the case of LR4 or CS6 for that matter, I feel the expense is worth it, particularly for those who are serious enough about photography to buy a D800.

  68. Shameful to not add RAW support for the Canon 5D Mk III for Lightroom 3.0. I can’t run 4.0 on any of my computers due to a need to upgrade the OS, which in turn would necessitate a new computer. I can no longer recommend Lightroom to people looking for long-term support; there are other competitors out there.

  72. I can only blow into the horn of the other posters. I am really upset, that there will be no support for the 5dMK3 in LR3, and then for sure also not in CS4. But maybe it is normal, that one has to pay at least 50% of the price of a body to adobe, but then I do not want to be normal.

    So I am going to stick to the Canon Software, when I do Raws.

  74. I just purchased Lightroom 3 in December 2011. It is unfair that less than a year later I will need to purchase Lightroom 4 to support my D800. Adobe…you need to fix this!

  77. This is EXTREMELY frustrating. Just like all the others above and before me I feel cheated and very frustrated with this situation: Nikon D800 & D4 not supported tethering in LR4. I have purchased LR3 and did upgrade to LR4 due to some of the enhancements and I received my new cameras and am unable to do studio work with them on the computer.

    Looks like you Adobe will be loosing many good and loyal customers. I have a photo session this weekend and will have to resort buying Capture One or just the software from Nikon and loose LR4 to the competition.

  79. As many here, I am interested by the Fuji X-Pro1.
    Following my knowledge, today, there is no soft able to take the RAW format of this box.
    And, I have many doubt about the soft companies will develop such a interpreter for this box. Why?

    Today, it’s the only one system using an other Matrix than the Bayer’s one. So do you think that they will invest money to develop a complete other calculation routine for only one box?

    This is a real problem for the one having bought the X-Pro1 and willing to work in RAW format. Clearly Fuji is proposing a solution but this soft is so slow that it’s practically unusable. So what???
    This X-Pro1 is a very good machine but if one don’t get modern tools to use it, it’s useless to get it

I just purchased a Canon 5d Mark III and brought up my 3.6 Lightroom like others and got the familiar “The files are from a camera which is not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom (14).” Well, like everyone else, I am happy with Lightroom 3.6 and don’t want to upgrade to 4.1. I found a work-around. Download DNG converter 7.1 for windows. It’s free.

    I downloaded my CR2 Raw files to my PC from my camera, ran the DNG converter program, brought up Lightroom 3.6 and imported the DNG files and it recognizes the files. You can now edit and convert to JPG like before. Now you can use Lightroom 3.6 on newer cameras like the 5d Mark III. It should work for the new Nikon D800 as well. It adds an extra step but save us upgrading to 4.1.

    I want to work on the RAW-Files in the same way as I have done earlier.

  82. Adding my voice to the fray of massive disappointment that I can’t view my 5D Mark iii files in LR 3. I have CS6 so I can open them in bridge but that is not in any way shape or form how I like to work. I’ve been a paying Adobe customer for many years, I upgrade often. I just upgraded to CS 6 so I would not be able to justify upgrading to LR 4 until later. I am also not interesting in your subscription model.

    This just makes me disappointed and sad. Also aggravated the system works this way, I wish a RAW file was just a raw file!

    1. We all wish RAW files were just RAW files — With technology changing all the time, Camera manufacturers coming out with new cameras, and with each camera it’s own RAW format, it is difficult to stay up to date.

      If it’s just Camera support you’re after — There are alternatives to upgrading, such as DNG conversion.

  84. Pretty disappointed Adobe, I’ve spent hours trying to work out why I can’t see my RAW files in LR 3 for my new D800. Like many people I can’t afford the upgrade after purchasing the new camera. Support for new cameras should continue for at least another 12 months. I won’t be buying both LR and CS6 again, simply a waste of money.

  87. Well I see that I am not alone in being surprised to see that there is no update to Lightroom 3 for the new D800 RAW file. I have now switched back to Capture NX2 it is great because it does not require double the file space to store the tweaks.
    I don’t know many people that switch RAW formats often, but it does seem a bizarre strategy for Adobe to champion when there are great alternatives.
    By the way the upgrade to elements 10 is also pretty disappointing I blinked and missed the new content (save it handles D800 raw).
    The idea behind lightroom was that it streamlines the process – a DNG converter adds in another step and more files and space on the disk. Not the direction I am going!
    Roll on a version of NX2 that sorts and organises !!

  89. Has anyone from Adobe answered the multitude of complaints about not being able to support D800 NEF in LR3? I was reading another thread where the Adobe staff just told the member the solution to being able to run LR4 on the newest OS was to just go buy a new computer?! So, I buy a new camera and now I have to buy a new computer and LR4 so I can see my files? You suck Adobe. I am seriously going to look into another photo editing/sorting program. This is completely wrong. I have had LR3 for less than a year. I am happy with it. Very happy with it. Now I need to spend 3000 more dollars? Nope. Not happening.

  94. WTF – no eos 5d mk iii support in LR 3? iPhoto can import Canon EOS 5d mk iii raw images, but Lightroom 3.6 can’t. I just cannot get over this. And no, I am not going to fork out money for an upgrade to Lightroom 4. Unbelievable.

  95. One work around is to use the latest Raw converter through bridge to create .DNG files and then import them into LR3. I agree with everyone here that the continuous fleecing by software vendors is total bullshit.

  96. I’m new to all this digital stuff. I just got a Nikon D300s and was wondering will a .NEF raw photo be able to be opened and worked with in Lightroom 4?? My old version of photoshop can’t and the Nikon View program that came with the camera is having issues and can’t change the image to a jpeg or tiff. At the moment I have a seemingly useless Raw format on my camera. Please answer in the simplest terms, I’m a black and white traditional guy! Thanks.

  97. I just bought LR3 several months ago and new camera support for it has already ceased?? This is ridiculous. I should not have to pay extra money to upgrade to a version that supports the Nikon D800. This is the end of any loyalty to Lightroom that I had.

  98. I have a new 1DX and need to have Lightroom 3.6 read the CR2 files. I also have Lightroom 4.1 which of course will work with the 1DX files. The problem is that Lightroom 4.1 is too slow in the develop module. It takes tooooooo long to work on my files. I need the same speed as Lightroom 3.6. Is there any chance support for the Canon EOS will be added to Lightroom 3.6?
    What is the fastest way to work in 4.1?

    1. Oops, I just read about the Adobe Raw Converter. Downloaded it and it works just fine. The extra time to convert is not real problem and I appreciate all the added time I can save by using 3.6 of 4.1

  99. The Canon 5d Markiii lightroom 3.6 Lack of Support Sucks. I have XP computers and will not upgrade. I have Light room 4.1 on some Windows 7 computers so its not about buying more softeware. this stinks.

  100. +1 for continued LR 3.6 support (D4 compatibility in my case). It’s not about the money (nor should it be for most folks who updated to a new pro body), it’s more that LR 4 isn’t very good – way too slow and resource hungry (sorry to the talented folks who wrote it, but LR 3.6 was way better as real-world software).

  101. can i ask IF there is a direct correlation between Lightroom Process Versions and ACR versions – i.e., PV03 uses ACR versions x-y, PV10 uses ACR versions a-b, PV12 uses ACR versions c-current

      ACR 2.4 & later, PS CS & Later, LR 1.0 & later

      ACR 4.6 & later, PS CS3 & Later, LR 2.1 & later
